Position Summary:
This position supports the Rice University Central Plant within the Real Estate and Facilities and Capital department. Under supervision, the role is responsible for the maintenance, troubleshooting, calibration, programming, and repair of campus utility metering systems, plant instrumentation, and Central Plant control systems, including co-generation control components. The position ensures the accuracy and proper functioning of utility meters, instrumentation, and control systems across the campus. Responsibilities include recommending system improvements, performing skilled electrical maintenance and installation, and supporting the overall reliability of Rice University's utility infrastructure.

Ideal Candidate Statement:
The ideal candidate may have little to no prior experience in instrumentation but should be trainable and ready to work. They should be pursuing or have completed education or certification in instrumentation or a related field. The candidate must be physically able to climb ladders and proficient in using basic functions of a Fluke 787 multimeter. This role requires a foundational understanding of analytical, scientific, or operational processes, along with the ability to follow standard operating procedures and quality guidelines. The candidate will perform assigned tasks under supervision, applying their developing expertise effectively.

Workplace Requirements:
This position is exclusively on-site, necessitating all duties to be performed in person at Rice University, with the option of working Monday through Friday from 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM or Tuesday through Friday from 6:00 AM – 4:30 PM. Per Rice policy 440, work arrangements may be subject to change.

Hiring Range: This is a temporary, full-time, benefits-eligible position, and the proposed hourly rate is $22.12 – $25.43 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience.
*Non-Exempt (hourly) positions under FLSA are eligible for overtime.

Minimum Requirements:

  • No formal education required
  • 0–1 years’ experience

Skills:

  • Basic knowledge of programmable logic controller (PLC) programming software
  • Ability to use basic hand tools, electrical meters, and analyzers
  • Strong problem-solving, critical thinking, and analytical skills
  • Foundational understanding of instruments and devices related to instrumentation
  • Proficiency in operating a PC and using job-related software applications

Essential Functions:

  • Performs preventative maintenance calibrations on utility metering instrumentation across campus under some supervision
  • Performs basic functions of plant operation equipment while utilizing the HMI under the supervision of operations personnel
  • Assists with troubleshooting and ensures necessary changes are made in calibration to ensure proper operation of controls and instrumentation
  • Assists with the installation of new electrical circuits and power supplies for instrumentation panels and controls
  • Assists in developing and installing instrumentation and electrical solutions under supervision
  • Assists in troubleshooting and repairing existing utility infrastructure control systems and components of the plants and campus utility production and distribution under supervision
  • Performs all other duties as assigned
