About the Department

The Counseling Advisor is responsible for advising new, continuing, and returning students in support of the College's mission and strategic plan objectives. Working within a team environment, the Advisor is responsible for executing and facilitating program goals by advising/coaching a full caseload of students. The Advisor will deliver all required and optional services which are designed to increase student success, graduation, and career readiness under the direct supervision of the Director, Advisement and Retention.

Travel will be required, as this position will work on both the Gloucester and Cumberland Campuses.

Position Duties

  1. Develops and maintains a cohort of identified Degree and Academic Certification seeking students for individual and group advisement.?? 
  1. Provides orientation and academic advisement to new, continuing, returning, and visiting students for appropriate course selection and case-management-style student services. Emphasis is placed on facilitating the success of academically at-risk students.   
  1. Under the direction of Advisement leadership, coordinates and executes the New Student Orientation in partnership with Gloucester Advisement. 
  1. Engage in initiatives that support the new RCSJ Advisement model, including but not limited to cross-campus staff meetings, system training, fostering relationships with divisions and deans, and keeping current with relevant updates and changes. 
  1. Provides excellent customer service by assisting with walk-in/virtual registration, maintaining a regular calendar of advising appointments and support of college activities related to student success, retention, and transfer. 
  1. Participates in orientation, registration, retention, and open house activities and is knowledgeable about college’s programs, resources, course sequencing and course selection with the ability to interpret the degree evaluation results to assist student with creating their educational goals.    
  1. Provides each cohort student intrusive case management throughout the academic year to review progress toward goals, to assess and review progress toward established goals, and provide advocacy for student success.  
  1. Assists with planning, implementing, and conducting skills-development workshops deemed necessary for total student enrichment, based on students’ needs. 
  1. Assists Director to develop, measure effectiveness of, and modify intervention strategies and report on those activities.  
  1. Makes student referrals to RCSJ and community resources and supportive services, such as, but not limited to cohort programs, Academic Support Center,  Wellness Center, Career & Internship, Special Services, Rowan University Center, etc.   
  1. Leverages technology to monitor the progress of assigned students, proactively identifying potential graduates, risks of probation or academic leave, and factors that may affect or improve academic success.  
  1. Completes required paperwork, reports and assigned tasks in an accurate and timely manner. 
  1. Ensures the integrity and confidentiality of academic records, maintaining compliance with FERPA, and other college policies, state, and federal regulations.  
  1. Perform other duties as, assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in counseling, student personnel services, student development, or a related area required.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Applicable experience advising students in a community college or similar environment.
  • Ability to use current applicable hardware and software, including Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, Power Point
  • Applicable experience with higher education system administration software. 
  • Demonstrated success in collaborating with all levels of the institution, and ability to work effectively with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community with a strong commitment to a comprehensive community college philosophy and a student-centered learning environment.
  • Commitment to and knowledge of a comprehensive community college philosophy and a student-centered learning environment.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule with variable hours, includes evenings and possible weekends.
  •  Ability to travel to multiple educational institutions, utilizing personal vehicle for travel
  • Possess the ability to work well and communicate effectively with prospective and current students, staff, faculty, administration, and colleagues and community partners
  • Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff and a commitment to a student-centered environment
