Job Summary

The Careers Instructor at Minnesota Independence College and Community (MICC) is responsible for working directly with students by teaching vocational skills and supporting students in their acquisition and use of these skills. Instructors play an integral part in the process of curriculum. This position focuses primarily in the areas of foodservice and hospitality.


Essential Functions

  • Develop, implement and teach curriculum based on student and program needs
  • Skill assessment and creation of individualized accommodations for student skill acquisition
  • Develop and maintain experiential learning opportunities with local businesses and employers
  • Record student information and evaluate student performance electronically
  • Other duties as assigned

Instruction & Curriculum Development

  • Plan, prepare and deliver updated syllabuses, lesson plans, learning objectives, and instructional materials that facilitate active learning and aligned with best practices
  • Assist students in developing directional skills and travelling independently through Metro Transit and Metro Mobility as part of transportation classes
  • Encourage and monitor the progress of individual students and use information to adjust curriculum strategies

Classroom Management

  • Manage student behavior in the classroom by establishing clear expectations and enforcing rules and procedures, aligned with the student handbook
  • Identify any students with needed classroom accommodations and collaborate with the advisors on an implementation plan
  • Provide a variety of learning materials and resources for use in educational activities

Stakeholder Communication

  • Serve as liaison between MICC and community partners to coordinate and communicate program needs as well as resolve issues regarding student concerns, schedule changes and other pertinent areas
  • Collect and analyze program data to maintain quality of services, improve partnerships, and meet accountability and reporting measures
  • Collaborate and consult with family members, advisors and community organizations

Requirements

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education or Special Education, Youth Work, Social Science, Sociology, Social Work, Psychology or related field required
  • Experience in working with young adults with learning disabilities is highly desirable
  • Classroom instruction and curriculum development is highly desirable

  • Ability to identify and assist in solving problems using strong organizational, time management, and interpersonal skills
  • Possess personal qualities of integrity, credibility and good judgment
  • Maintain confidentiality of organizational, employee and student information
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, with strong oral and written communication skills
  • Confidence in developing partnerships with outside organizations and businesses

Paid Time Off (PTO)

MICC offers a generous amount of Paid Time Off (PTO):

  • 176 hours / 22 days (prorated upon start date) of paid vacation time
  • 80 hours / 10 days (accrued at 3.33 hours per pay period) of paid sick time
  • 80 hours / 10 days (holiday schedule available upon request) of paid holidays
  • 8 hours / 1 day for floating holiday

Sign-On Bonus Terms

  • Gross pay of $250 upon hire date (paid on the first paycheck following MICC's payroll schedule)
  • Gross pay of $250 at 90 days of employment (must be in good standing in order to receive the bonus)
