QUALIFICATIONS
Education
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing – RN/LPN
Experience/Skills
- At least one to two years’ experience in a clinical setting
- Acquires Outpatient Surgery education through clinical experience, on-the-job training, in-services, and continuing education
- Exhibits skills in assessment of patients, preoperative care, and postoperative care
- Proficiently reads, writes, and understands English
- Accurately reads fine print, supply labels, patient identification bracelets, the surgical schedule, and policies and procedures
- Accurately hears and follows verbal instructions
Required Licenses/Certifications
- Registered Nurse/LPN licensed to practice in the state of Indiana
- CPR
- ACLS
Working Conditions
- Works in a well-lit, air-conditioned environment with a temperature of 65ºF-72ºF and humidity of 45%-55%
- Wears hospital-provided scrub attire while on duty

Nursing Duties – Assessment/Planning/Documentation
- PAT Nurse conducts thorough assessments, either in person or via phone, reviews patients’ medical history, medications, allergies, and identifies potential risks or concerns
- Orders and coordinates necessary pre-operative tests, such as lab work, EKGs, and imaging ensuring timely completion and addressing any abnormal results.
- PAT Nurse meticulously documents all assessments, interventions, and patient education in the electronic medical record (EMR).
Nursing Duties – Communication & Accountability
- Educate patients and their families about the procedure, pre-operative instructions, post-operative care, and potential risks, answering questions and addressing concerns.
- Communicates effectively with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other healthcare professionals, relaying important information and ensuring a coordinated approach to patient care.
- Follows up with patients and referring providers as needed to address any outstanding issues or concerns.
- Confirms that all necessary paperwork is completed and available before the procedure, contributing to a smooth and efficient surgical process.
Nursing Duties – Miscellaneous
- Participates in hospital and/or community activities to promote the growth of nursing and patient care
- Works on nursing department committees
- Participates in medical and nursing department monitoring, quality assurance, and improvement procedures
- Accepts other duties as assigned
