Summary
The Practicum Counselor provides counseling services to clients under the supervision of a licensed professional as part of their graduate training program. This role is designed to develop clinical skills and professional competencies while delivering direct support to individuals, groups, and families. The Practicum Counselor is responsible for conducting intakes, assessments, and counseling sessions; maintaining accurate documentation; and participating in case reviews, trainings, and supervision meetings. This position requires strong interpersonal skills, a commitment to ethical practice, and the ability to apply academic learning in a real-world counseling environment.
Job Responsibilities
- Conduct client intakes, psychosocial assessments, and participate in treatment planning.
- Provide individual, group, and/or family counseling services under supervision.
- Apply evidence-based counseling techniques and interventions consistent with program goals.
- Document all client interactions, progress notes, and treatment updates accurately and promptly.
- Maintain strict confidentiality and adhere to ethical and professional counseling standards.
- Participate in weekly supervision meetings, case consultations, and training sessions.
- Collaborate with clinical staff and community resources to support client needs.
- Assist with program development, outreach, or educational workshops as assigned.
- Monitor client progress and communicate concerns to supervisors in a timely manner.
- Uphold agency policies, procedures, and compliance with legal and accreditation requirements.
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Current enrollment in a graduate program in Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, or a related field (required).
- Completion of prerequisite coursework as determined by the academic program.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build rapport with diverse clients.
- Demonstrated commitment to ethical practice and professional development.
- Ability to accept and integrate feedback from supervisors.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Organizational skills to manage caseload, documentation, and scheduling.
- Cultural competence and sensitivity to diverse populations.
- Basic computer proficiency and ability to use electronic health record systems (training provided).
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk, in counseling sessions, and working on a computer.
- Ability to communicate effectively in person, by phone, and through written documentation.
- Occasional need to lift up to 15 pounds (files, materials, or office supplies).
- Adequate vision and hearing to observe client behavior, respond to verbal and non-verbal cues, and complete documentation.
- Standard office and counseling environment with regular interaction with clients, supervisors, and staff.
- May involve exposure to emotionally charged situations and clients in crisis.
- Requires strict adherence to confidentiality and professional boundaries.
- Scheduled hours are typically during the day but may include evenings or weekends depending on program needs.
- Position is performed under close supervision with regular review of casework and documentation
