About the Department

Responsible for work in receiving, recording, maintaining and protecting all evidence for the Police Department. Advanced technical work in crime scene investigation, processing and identification functions. Work is performed under the general supervision of a Lieutenant.

Position Duties

The list of essential functions, as outlined herein, is intended to be representative of the tasks performed within this classification. It is not necessarily descriptive of any one position in the classification. The omission of an essential function does not preclude management from assigning duties not listed herein if such functions are a logical assignment to the position.

  1. Receives, identifies and records all property and evidence. Electronically enters and maintains all information pertaining to property. Maintains stores and makes copies of relevant documents and chain of custody. Transports evidence to and from the crime lab and maintains status reports and results.
  2. Notifies and returns items and evidence to the public. Handles all correspondence pertaining to evidence. Researches and maintains paperwork and actual physical destruction of property. Verifies case dispositions.
  3. Prepares court orders for drug disposal and other high liability items.
  4. Assists the State Attorney’s Office and maintains state attorney notices on disposition of cases; testifies in court proceedings.
  5. Assists officers and investigators in handling of evidence and processing scenes.
  6. Accesses, inputs and retrieves information from a computer.
  7. Prepares reports. Maintains records and files.
  8. Conducts crime scene investigations.
  9. Processes evidence for fingerprints or relevant physical evidence.
  10. Takes photographs and documentation of crime scenes or police calls as needed.
  11. Collects and preserves physical evidence at crime scenes or police calls as needed.
  12. Attends and observes autopsies and collects evidence.
  13. Completes detailed and accurate reports.
  14. Conducts work found in the Detective Classification.
  15. Must be able to lift 25lbs or more.
  16. Regular in-person attendance during City and department business hours, since face-to-face interaction and coordination of work with other employees, outside colleagues, residents, or vendors, and all immediate access to documents or other information located only in the workplace is required

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school graduation or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma. 
  • At minimum four (4) years of experience in dealing with evidence and/or police related field. 
  • Certification from the Property and Evidence Association of Florida preferred

Other Qualifications

  • This function will also involve the consistent performance of physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing, walking, and the lifting, pushing, manipulation, and carrying of heavy objects (25lbs or more).
  • Some job tasks will involve the exposure to the elements including heat, cold, humidity, inclement weather, loud noise, toxic/chemical agents, electrical currents, pathogens, violent behavior, uneven ground, Tasks include working around unstable structures (fences, housing, etc.), moving parts, vehicles, equipment, carts, and materials handling where heightened awareness to surroundings and environment is essential.
