JOB CLASS: COUNSELORS
LEVEL: I
POSITION TITLE: COUNSELOR
CLASS DEFINITION:
Positions within this class are characterized by assignment to a specific school or schools as either the counselor or guidance administrator. Levels within this class are differentiated by virtue of the number of schools and programs served, the grade levels of the facilities to which the assignment is made, and the level of education and experience required to perform the specifications of the assignment. Positions within this class may answer to the chief administrator of the facility or to the Counselor II position, depending upon the assignment.
POSITION DEFINITION:
Under the immediate supervision of the principal to help plan and develop guidance programs in relation to the needs of the pupils.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
• Helps each pupil develop self-understanding, self-acceptance, and decision-making competencies.
• Counsels with pupils and parents of pupils who exhibit academic, social, or emotional problems which adversely affect optimum educational development.
• Plans jointly with administrators, teachers, counselors, and other appropriate district staff members for educational programming for pupils.
• Recommends and arranges placements for pupils in specialized district programs in consultation with the principal, parents, and directors of special district programs.
• Investigates and implements district policy in emergency situations involving pupils (suicide threats, battered children, sex offenses, pregnancies, narcotics, and assaults) which occur or are discovered in the school setting, acting upon the request of school administrators and working with parents, legal authorities, medical doctors, and other concerned.
• Collaborates with law enforcement, mental health, and family service agencies in cooperatively attempting to remedy problems involving pupils.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
• Participates cooperatively with the principal or his designee to mutually develop the system by which he will be evaluated in conformance with the district’s uniform guidelines for evaluation and assessment.
• Keeps case records and provides summaries or written referrals to appropriate agencies.
• Keeps well informed of regulations and laws dealing with youth and or current policies and procedures of all community mental health and social agencies.
• Interprets the school program and Guidance Services Department functions to individuals and community groups as requested.
• Maintains professional competence through participation in in-service education activities provided by the district and/or self-selected professional growth activities.
• Responsible to assist with student intervention and/or classroom supervision.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:
• Holds a valid and current California General Pupil Personnel Services or Standard Designated Services in Pupil Personnel Services credential.
• Master’s Degree in school counseling, including all courses needed to meet credential requirements.
• Successful experience in the field of education or school social work.
• Classroom credential and teaching experience required.
PHYSICAL ABILITIES:
___ Visual capability to read handwritten or typed documents, and the display screen of various office equipment and machines
___ Able to conduct verbal conversation in English and other designated languages
___ Able to hear normal range verbal conversation (approximately 60 decibels)
___ Able to sit, stand, stoop, kneel, bend, walk
___ Able to stand in one space for sustained periods
___ Able to lift up to 20 pounds frequently and 50 pounds occasionally
___ Able to push and pull objects weighing up to 100 pounds
___ Able to exhibit full range of motion for shoulder external rotation and internal rotation
___ Able to exhibit full range of motion for shoulder abduction and adduction
___ Able to exhibit full range of motion for elbow flexion and extension
___ Able to exhibit full range of motion for back flexion
