About the Department
Performs responsible skilled work in the operation and maintenance of equipment related to the thickening and dewatering of wastewater sludge; Represents the City on daily coordination with Solid Waste Authority of Palm Beach County / Synagro and its partners relating to hauling of wastewater sludge, does related work as required.? Work is performed under general supervision.
Position Duties
- Operates and maintains gravity belt thickener and belt filter press equipment, polymer system, sludge feed pumps and sludge cake loading equipment.
- Optimizes dewatering operations for cost effective treatment and disposal.
- Operates and maintains associated support systems including polymer storage, feed and makeup, compressed air piping and equipment, conveyors, thickener belts, sludge feed and chemical metering pump systems, dried sludge cake conveyance equipment, and associated sludge pumping equipment.
- Performs and interprets lab work related to sludge dewatering to regulate operation of dewatering process.
- Coordinate the loading, hauling, placement, and staging of tractor-trailer used to haul sludge to Solid Waste Authority of Palm Beach County / Synagro or to landfill when needed.
- Liaison with partners regarding scheduling, delivery, tracking, and monitoring of sludge deliveries.
- Cleans dewatering equipment, polymer equipment, trenches, loading areas, and any other areas daily.
- Monitors and adjusts thickening equipment i.e. rollers, belt tracking, belts etc...
- Perform routine maintenance of dewatering and associated equipment including lubrication, mechanical adjustment, and replacement of equipment components.
- Performs related tasks as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge of:
- The operation and maintenance of thickening and dewatering equipment and the principles and methods of sludge dewatering.
- Operating a wastewater treatment plant including the characteristics and maintenance requirements related to sludge handling.
- The occupational hazards of the work and of the necessary safety precautions.
- The use and care of hand tools.
- The use of computers and SCADA systems associated with plant operations.
- Mechanical ability.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Read meters and charts accurately.
Other Qualifications
- High School diploma, GED Equivalency or any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school
- One (1) year of experience in the operation of sludge thickening and/or dewatering equipment.
- Graduation from trade school or vocational school in a mechanical related field is preferred.
