Duties
You will apply knowledge of clothing and footwear design and fabrication, fabrics and materials, production methodology, and anthropometric criteria in order to develop clothing, clothing accessory, and equipment designs.,You will explore, evaluate, and determine the applicability of various fabrics and design concepts.,You will recommend and justify the need for new projects or changing directions in ongoing projects.,You will review or evaluate new technologies to improve the performance and functionality of Navy uniforms and protective clothing.,You will conduct focus groups and other discussions with users, combat developers, program managers, and other project personnel in order to clearly understand performance requirements.,You will oversee the work of assistants and coordinate the efforts of design and test/evaluation teams in carrying out design projects.
Qualifications
In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-11) or pay band in the federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector researching, developing, testing or evaluating dress/protective clothing, footwear, accessories, and/or equipment. Specialized experience includes most or all the following: 1) Determining the applicability of various fabrics and design concepts to accomplish an assignment; 2) Reviewing functional utility, comfort, quality, fit, and/or appearance; 3) Formulating detailed work plans by estimating labor hours and preparing cost estimates; 4) Preparing reports documenting work efforts, findings, conclusions, and recommendations; 5) Working from sketches, sample models, and information concerning details. Education
Applicants must meet the following Basic Requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must possess: Degree: textile technology. or Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in textile technology that included at least 20 semester hours in textile technology and closely related subjects, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
