Position Purpose
Under the direct supervision of a certified staff member, to assist certified professional staff with students in the classroom to meet instructional goals and behavioral objectives.

Essential Job Functions

Assist instructional personnel in the education, training, and supervision of students with autism.
Apply strategies and techniques to foster independence, self-reliance and social skills.
Assist instructional personnel with the delivery of lesson plans, presentation of learning materials, and in conduct of instructional exercises.
Monitor student’s progress regarding individual educational plans and goals.
Monitor and assist individual students and/or small groups of students with autism in a variety of instructional activities as a follow-up to the presentation of instructional lessons by instructional personnel. Use positive reinforcement strategies and other appropriate techniques to assist students in the development of appropriate behavior.
Assist in a of a variety of instructional materials and learning aids geared to the instruction level of children with autism.
Monitor students during classroom activities, recesses, and field trips.
Operate and assist students in the operation of a variety of instructional aids and media and computer assisted instructional equipment.
Assist in maintaining an orderly, safe, and positive learning environment.
Depending on students' needs, may assist students with basic personal care activities such as dressing, toileting or bathroom including catheterization, feeding and grooming.
Use good judgment regarding appropriate action to assist injured or physically ill students and to assist in medical emergencies.
May assist students on and off the bus as needed.
May assist in administering a variety of tests and record results.
Attend specialized training as required.

Travel Requirements
Travel between schools, or between schools and offices, may be required for certain positions.

Ability to perform basic arithmetic operations as needed to assist students.
Ability to understand, apply and use personal computers and software applications (e.g., Word, Excel).
Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals.
Ability to maintain confidentiality of information regarding students, employees and others.
Ability to establish a supportive and compassionate relationship with students with special needs.
Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff and others contacted in the course of work.
Ability to report work orally or in writing to supervisor as required.
Effective writing and verbal communication skills.

Behavior management strategies and techniques relating to students with Autism
Demonstrate an understanding, patient, and receptive attitude toward students of varied age groups.
Quickly recognize and respond to emergencies pertaining to a variety of student medical conditions.
Assist students with basic personal care activities such as dressing or toileting as needed.
Utilize a variety of instructional materials and procedures to enhance a positive educational environment.

Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards
Works in standard office and school building environments.
Ability to work outdoors during outdoor student activities.

Qualifications Profile
High School diploma or equivalent AND
-Successful completion of college level coursework - 60 Credit Hours
OR passing of examination ParaPro Assessment

TEMPORARY POSITION: Yes
            Note:   All temporary positions will end on June 30^th.

NUMBER OF MONTHS/DAYS: 10 Month - 185 Days
Note: Months/days will be pro-rated to start date.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Paraeducator Certificattion

NOTE: A minimum of a high school diploma or GED is required for all employees of the Seaford School District.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE: Interested and qualified candidates should complete an online application.

NOTE: Currently employed staff members interested and certified/licensed in this position will be given first consideration and should remit a staff transfer request on the Seaford School District website www.seafordbluejays.org no later than the application closing date referenced above.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: All new state employees will be required to participate in the State of Delaware's Direct Deposit system. With direct deposit, wage and salary payments are deposited in the employee's bank account via electronic funds transfer.

All final candidates for employment must have a satisfactory criminal background check before being placed on contract/payroll as per State of Delaware regulations. Candidates must call the Delaware State Police at (800) 464-4357 to make an appointment. The cost of the criminal background check is $65 (expense borne by the prospective employee). Final candidates must also receive a satisfactory child protection registry check.

Final candidates must also produce documentation of Mantoux skin test results for entrance to school system.

The State of Delaware has initiated a lag pay policy which means that new employees will receive the first paycheck at the end of the second pay period of work.
