About the Department


The City of Pittsburg is seeking a motivated and reliable Sweeper Operator to join our Public Works team. 

This position is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of street sweeping equipment to clean and maintain City streets, parking lots, and other assigned areas. Street sweeping is an important pollution prevention function provided in our communities. It is required under State and Federal regulations related to the Clean Water Act. State stormwater regulations also require street sweeping as a component of Pittsburg's pollution prevention services.  The ideal candidate will take pride in keeping our community clean and safe while adhering to established policies, procedures, and safety standards.

Ideal candidates will possess the following: 

  • Current or previous work experience operating street sweeping machinery.
  • Possession of a valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with air brake and tank endorsement with a clean driving record.
  • Knowledge of street sweeping operations, traffic laws, and safety practices.
  • Ability to operate, clean, and maintain specialized equipment.
  • Ability to follow maps, routes, and schedules with attention to detail.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Physical ability to perform outdoor work under various weather conditions.

The City of Pittsburg is a full-service city following the council-manager form of government. Position Duties

Duties include but are not limited to, the following:

  • Independently operate a power-driven street sweeper to clean residential and business street surfaces and gutters.
  • Transport and dump street sweepings at prearranged dump sites.
  • Inspect, start up, operate, and shut down equipment in a manner that ensures safety of self and others; protection of equipment and property; and the efficient accomplishment of objectives.
  • Clean, inspect, adjust, service and maintain equipment; advise equipment maintenance personnel of need for major mechanical repair.
  • Locate, inspect, and clean storm drainage facilities during inclement weather; set up traffic warning signs in case of flooding conditions.
  • Respond to emergency or complaint calls regarding debris on street surfaces; ensure that appropriate action is initiated and appropriate personnel are notified.
  • Interact with the public concerning complaints and questions regarding street sweeping operations.
  • Read and interpret basic GIS mapping.
  • May provide training to new employees in the work unit.

Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of education, experience, and training that would provide the best qualified candidates. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:


Education:  Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.


Experience:  One year of progressively responsible experience operating Class A or B equipment.


Special Requirements:  Possession at the time of hire and continued maintenance of a valid Class A or B California Driver's License with air brakes endorsement is required. 


Other Requirements:  Physically and mentally capable of performing the functions of the job summarized in Example of Duties including: 


Working Conditions:  Physical Demands: Prolonged periods of sitting, moderate lifting, reaching, and stooping. Emphasize eye-hand-foot coordination, vision, and hearing. Outside work with exposure to noise, vibrations, dust, darkness, traffic conditions and variable weather. Must be available to workday or night shift, as assigned.


Knowledge of:

  • Modern equipment and communication tools used for business functions and task coordination, including basic computer and software programs relevant to work.
  • Oral and written communication skills; business English. 
  • Safe operation of trucks and construction equipment.
  • Applicable sections of the California Vehicle Code. 
  • Safe work practices.
  • Principles and practices of excellent customer service.


Ability to:

  • Operate power driven street sweeping equipment.
  • To service, adjust and maintain equipment.
  • To recognize the need for more extensive repair work.
  • To work independently.
  • To understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Use standard operating guidelines as contained in City reference manuals, state and federal environmental guidelines, and equipment operation manuals, and personal protective equipment. 
  • Use vacuum street sweeper, broom street sweeper, dump truck, pickup truck, steam cleaner and storm drain cleaning machine.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions and prioritize workload to meet deadlines. 
  • Read, write and comprehend the English language at a level necessary for effective job performance exercising correct English usage.
  • Communicate effectively, tactfully and positively in both oral and written form.
  • Operate modern office equipment including computers and software related to work.
  • Utilize appropriate safety procedures and practices for assigned duties.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.   
  • Contribute effectively to the accomplishments of City goals, objectives and activities.
