The Ontario Fire Department has an exciting opportunity for someone interested in furthering their career in the field of fire prevention and fire safety.  The Deputy Fire Marshal, within the Fire Prevention Bureau, will assist the Fire Marshal in planning, coordinating, and directing the City's Fire Prevention programs.  Additionally, this position will be responsible for overseeing the Department's Fire Prevention Specialist staff.

The Ontario Fire Department

The Ontario Fire Department is a team committed to professional and compassionate public service. The Department responds to more than 23,000 calls per year serving and protecting a population well over 180,000 residents, covering nearly 50 square miles. There are eleven (11) fire stations that house ten (10) engine companies and four (4) truck companies. The City of Ontario is in the process of developing 13 square miles in the Ontario Ranch area where the Fire Department will soon begin construction of Fire Station Nine.
 
Ontario is a full-service department providing fire/rescue services; medical services through the department's paramedic program; safety education; fire inspections; plan review; and various specialty teams such as SWAT medics, bomb squad, hazmat, and urban search and rescue.

The Bureau utilizes various databases in conjunction with other City departments to identify the most hazardous occupancies in the City. Periodic inspections are then conducted to ensure code compliance. The Bureau of Fire Prevention is responsible for developing and implementing programs and policies that prevent or reduce the magnitude of emergency occurrences, such as loss of life and property, or environmental damage.

Position Duties

The essential functions typically performed by the Deputy Fire Marshal include the following:
 
  • Assists the Fire Marshal with planning, organizing, coordinating, and managing the City's Fire Prevention programs including inspections and public fire education programs.
  • Participates in the development, implementation, and administration of comprehensive programs, policies, guidelines, and procedures related to fire prevention operations and activities; prepares and presents reports regarding Bureau activities and programs; recommends changes to Fire Prevention operations.
  • Supervises and directs the activities of staff, including employee selection, work assignment, performance evaluation, employee development, disciplinary action, and complaint resolution.
  • Manages the Fire Department’s comprehensive program pertaining to inspections of buildings and other structures for compliance with applicable provisions of State and/or local fire prevention codes; coordinates the preparation of inspection records and technical letters pertaining to recommendations and violations.
  • When appropriate, responds on behalf of the Fire Marshal or Fire Chief to citizen and customer complaints related to fire prevention services.
  • Plans, develops, and implements programs for public education and dissemination of information regarding fire safety and prevention; responds to questions and inquiries from the public.
  • Represents the City and Fire Department and makes presentations to community, civic, educational groups, and business representatives at fire safety public education events.
  • Maintains knowledge of current trends, legislation, and best practices related to the fire safety field; ensures fire prevention programs and activities are in compliance with relevant laws, regulations, and rules.
  • Conducts inspections of buildings and other structures for compliance with applicable provisions of State and/or local codes; prepares inspection records and technical letters pertaining to recommendations and violations.
  • Interacts with other City agencies/departments to represent the Fire Department in matters relating to fire prevention; attends City development meetings in the absence of the Fire Marshal.
  • Coordinates the development and maintenance of inspection schedules and records on all commercial, industrial, institutional, and sprinklered occupancies within the City.
  • Provides staff assistance to the Fire Marshal in the performance of administrative assignments and special projects.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Fire Science, Public Administration, Business Administration, or a closely related field. Four (4) years of qualifying experience may be substituted for two (2) years of education.

Experience

Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in fire prevention, fire code enforcement, including two (2) years of supervisory level experience.

Licenses

Valid California Class C driver's license and an acceptable driving record at the time of appointment and throughout employment.

Desirable

  • Certified as a Fire Inspector II by the California Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) or completion of the certificate's required courses.
  • Possession of a Fire Inspector II certification issued by the International Code Council (ICC).
