Description

General Purpose of the Position
The Area Manager leads and manages 4–12 Service Center Managers (SCMs) in a designated geographical region. This role is responsible for recruiting, developing, and motivating a team of Managers to achieve business results at both the Service Center and Area levels. While working within established practices, policies, and procedures, the Area Manager is encouraged to create innovative approaches to grow the business.

This role serves as the vital link between Area personnel, the Regional Manager, and Corporate Staff, ensuring effective communication flows throughout the organization. Successful Area Managers balance task focus with people focus, understanding that selecting the right talent, managing performance, coaching, motivating, and recognizing employees are key to maximizing profitability and growth.


Essential Functions

1. Talent Management

  • Retain, promote, and ensure a continuous supply of highly competent SCMs.

  • Manage individual performance through goal setting, feedback, coaching, recognition/rewards, and appropriate discipline.

  • Enhance manager skills through clear expectations, ongoing feedback, and training.

  • Continuously challenge team members to improve and grow.

  • Monitor staffing levels against current and future needs.

  • Attract, assess, and select talent that meets established criteria.

2. Achieving Business Results

  • Develop and implement business plans and capital/expense budgets.

  • Monitor key operating data to identify improvement opportunities and ensure changes are implemented.

  • Audit monthly business transactions, reconcile accounts, and resolve claims.

  • Monitor competitor business practices and industry trends.

3. Building Team Culture

  • Model and promote company vision and values.

  • Conduct periodic team meetings for problem-solving, team building, and communication.

  • Help managers understand how their individual performance impacts Area, Regional, and Company success.

  • Ensure information flows effectively up, down, and across the organization.

  • Share best practices with peers across the company.

4. Compliance, Liaison, and Relationship Management

  • Serve as liaison between Area personnel, Regional Matrix staff, Regional Manager, and Corporate Staff.

  • Ensure all actions comply with company policies, values, and applicable laws/regulations.

  • Champion new initiatives and change management.

  • Ensure Service Center compliance with marketing initiatives and the “Super Pro” training process.

  • Develop and maintain business relationships with vendors, suppliers, retailers, and fleet accounts.

  • Represent the company in community relations efforts.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required

  • Effective interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.

  • Knowledge of cash, facility, and safety control policies and practices.

  • High school diploma or GED required; one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.


Work Environment

  • Shop environment with extended standing, stair climbing, and occasional lifting up to 50 lbs.

  • Requires crouching, bending, twisting, and working with hands overhead.

  • Non-climate-controlled setting; occasional exposure to fumes and loud noises.

  • Flexible schedule availability required.
