DESCRIPTION OF THE DISTRICT
Bentley Community Schools is a thriving K-12 school district located in the City of Burton, Michigan. We serve approximately 710 students across three schools and approximately 150 students in 6th-8th grades, fostering a positive and supportive learning environment for all. We are seeking a responsible, dependable, and student-focused individual to join our team as a Lunchroom Monitor.
JOB SUMMARY
The Lunchroom Monitor will ensure a safe, orderly, and positive lunch period for all students. This position plays an important role in maintaining a respectful and inclusive school environment.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS - Supervise students during lunch periods in the cafeteria and designated lunch areas.
- Maintain order and enforce school rules and expectations.
- Monitor student behavior to promote a respectful, drama-free, and safe environment.
- Assist students as needed (e.g., opening food packages, cleaning up spills).
- Address minor student conflicts using positive and respectful communication.
- Report significant behavior issues to administration promptly.
- Oversee the cleanliness of the cafeteria, ensuring tables and floors are tidy between and after lunch periods.
- Assist in organizing and directing student flow to and from lunch areas.
- Support students with special needs or dietary restrictions as directed.
- Promote positive social interactions and model respectful behavior at all times.
- Live with intentionality into the ethical code of conduct Michigan Code of Educational Ethics
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - High school diploma or equivalent.
- Experience working with middle school-aged children is preferred.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to remain calm and fair while enforcing rules.
- Dependable, punctual, and able to work independently.
- Ability and willingness to seek clarity when unsure of anything.

2 hours per school day (Monday-Friday, following the school calendar)
Hours: approximately 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

MINIMUM PHYSICAL AND COGNITIVE SKILLS
Physical demands of the job are related to being on your feet and actively moving within the cafeteria space.- Stamina and Mobility: Monitors must be able to stand and walk for extended periods, often on hard floors, to circulate throughout the cafeteria. This also includes the ability to bend, stoop, and reach to assist with clean-up, such as wiping tables or picking up trash.
- Physical Dexterity: Tasks like cleaning up spills, moving chairs, or helping to organize trays require a degree of physical dexterity.
- Emergency Response: In an emergency, a monitor may need to react quickly. While not a daily occurrence, the ability to physically respond to an incident, such as a student falling or a fight breaking out, is a necessary skill.
- Lifting: The ability to lift objects, such as a box of supplies or a filled trash bag up to 25 pounds.
Cognitive skills for a lunchroom monitor center around awareness, communication, and problem-solving. - Situational Awareness: Monitors must be constantly aware of their surroundings, observing student interactions, identifying potential conflicts or hazards, and noticing when a student may need assistance. This includes keeping a watchful eye on students' behavior and movements to prevent accidents.
- Effective Communication: The ability to communicate clearly and calmly is crucial. This involves giving instructions to students, responding to their questions, and relaying information to teachers or administrators. A monitor must also be skilled in using a firm yet respectful tone to enforce rules and mediate disputes.
- Problem-Solving and Decision-Making: Able to make quick decisions to resolve minor conflicts, address spills or messes, and handle unexpected situations, such as a student feeling unwell. The ability to use logic and reasoning to find solutions is key to maintaining a smooth and safe lunch period.
- Patience and Self-Control: Middle schoolers can be loud and rowdy. Must have a high level of patience and self-control to remain calm under pressure, avoid aggressive reactions, and maintain a composed demeanor.
- Knowledge of School Policies: Understanding and consistently applying the school's rules and procedures for student conduct, emergencies, and cleanliness.
