About the Department
The Town's department of Planning & Zoning is seeking a GIS Coordinator to perform complex professional duties in support of the Town's geographic information systems. Under supervision from the Director of Planning and Zoning, this employee designs, produces, manages and analyzes data sets, maps, and other various GIS products; prepares concept plans; manages new and existing addresses in coordination with other local officials; and leads and manages GIS projects. Candidates should have a solid understanding of GIS concepts and Esri software. We are looking for a passionate GIS professional who is self-motivated and eager to provide GIS-based solutions for our staff and community.
Employment Status: Full Time
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Schedule: Monday-Friday; 8am-5pm; some evening work/meetings may be required
Salary starts at $62,233.60 - negotiable dependent on experience and qualifications
Position Duties
- Design, produce, manage and analyze data sets, maps, and other various GIS products.
- Provide professional input, such as scoping, requirements and specifications for projects, plans, and documents.
- Prepare concept plans, draft plats, and/or final plats and site plans survey (depending on qualification).
- Create mapping exhibits and provide technical mapping assistance for land planning, land use, and other special planning studies.
- Assist various Town departments with mapping inquiries, including record deed research and determination of property ownership and the location of easements and/or rights of ways.
- Assist the Director and other Town departments, boards, and commissions in the technical review of subdivision plans and site plans.
- Assist the Director in review of subdivisions and major land development projects.
- Read codes, subdivision plans and plats and site plans.
- Maintain and ensure the accuracy of the Town's GIS data, including, but not limited to, entering, updating, and correcting address changes.
- Organize, secure, and protect the Town's GIS data.
- Provide professional guidance and enforcement of Town floodplain management.
- Assists police department with the updating of addressing software used for law enforcement.
- Assist with customer service and general office duties as needed.
- Coordinate community-wide GIS projects and services with Warren County and other related agencies and departments.
- Uses and assists with management of permitting software (training available).
- Perform related tasks as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Experience Required: Two (2) years of experience in the application of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Experience in surveying, computer science, architecture, landscape architecture, planning, and/or engineering is preferred.
Minimum Education Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) or a related field.
Certifications: Virginia driver’s license, ArcGIS Pro Professional (preferred), Certified Floodplain Manager (within 12 months of employment)

- Use a variety of office machines such as a fax, copier, and scanner

- Ability to gather and process technical data used in GIS Mapping products
- Skilled use of GPS hardware and software for the collection of geospatial data of various types
- Ability to maintain positive and effective working relationships with the public and other employees

- Office environment; mostly sedentary work; occasional outdoor work.
- The position is not subject to adverse environmental conditions.
- Requires the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects.
- Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for depth perception, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, use of measuring devices, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities.
- The work requires sitting and standing, both for potentially long periods of time.
- Mental/visual effort required due to sustained periods of concentration necessary for the design and layout of a project and constant breaks in concentration associated with staff and/or the public requiring assistance.
