Purpose: The BBU Credit Officer manages, organizes, and controls the scoring and underwriting of commercial lending activities up to $750,000 for the bank. This role regularly directs and supervises all aspects of the BBU function, in conjunction with the BBU Credit Manager and ensures the maintenance of the highest level of quality and profitability of the bank’s scored and scored plus commercial loan portfolio. The BBU Credit Officer provides guidance and assistance to BDOs, commercial relationship managers and branch managers and approves loans within lending authority and participates in the development and review of bank lending policies and procedures in conjunction with the BBU Credit Manager. In this role, you will coordinate with other departments in the development and implementation of tactical plans and objectives for the bank.
Ensures that the activities of the Business Banking Unit are in compliance with all laws and regulations, bank policies and procedures, and are in line with the bank’s strategic plans and objectives as established by the Board of Directors and executive management. Acts as BBU Credit Manager in the BBU Credit Manager’s absence.
Essential Functions:
- Quality and Profitability of Scored and Scored Plus Commercial Loan Portfolio
- Approves and rejects loans within lending authority and recommends approval of loans on an exception basis.
- Reviews financial statements and completes cash flow analysis.
- Small Business Administration (SBA) subject matter expert and administers the SBA program for the bank.
- Works with Internal Loan Review and the BBU Credit Manager to ensure the validity, accuracy, timeliness and consistency of the Loan Risk Rating process for the BBU portfolio.
- Participates with the BBU Credit Manager and Chief Credit Officer in setting underwriting standards, loan products, facility structure, pricing parameters (while evaluating risk and return) to ensure competitiveness in the marketplace.
- Support of Business Development Efforts
- Assumes leadership role and coordinates with BDOs, and branch personnel to develop skills in analyzing and booking high quality earning assets.
- Ensures effective turnaround time on all BBU loan decisions.
- Develops, Implements and Maintains Credit Policies and Procedures
- Assists BBU Credit Manager in staying up to date with the changing legislative and regulatory climate.
- Assists BBU Credit Manager in ensuring that the Credit Standard Operating procedures and other manuals affecting the BBU lending function are updated and kept current.
- Assists BBU Credit Manager in the establishment, monitoring and maintenance of all requirements as established by the company for Sarbanes Oxley.
- Keeps up to date with all SBA programs and guidelines and communicates to the applicable personnel.
- Training and Communication
- Provides ongoing support and guidance to branch managers in all aspects of small business lending protocol.
- Assumes leadership role in training and providing technical information to branch personnel.
- Performs other duties, as assigned.
- Acts as backup BBU Credit Manager when necessary.

Job Related Qualifications:
Required:
- Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Business, Economics or related field.
- Prior Experience: 3+ years’ of commercial credit experience in the banking / financial industry.
- Licenses or Accreditation: N/A

- In-depth understanding of the financial and risk analysis associated with small business lending.
- Customer relationship experience.
- Strong organizational, interpersonal, management, communication (both written and oral), analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Results-oriented individual with strong sense of urgency.
