As the Recreation Assistant, you will:
  • Assist with the delivery of recreation programs, classes, activities, and events.
  • Distributes and collects gaming equipment and assists in setting up facilities for classes and other activities.
  • Delivers front-line customer service via phone and in-person interactions in a fast, friendly and professional manner.
  • Supports event-day operations, which may involve handling cash, distributing beverages or giveaways, and leading community activities.
  • Assists with pre-event and post-event logistics, including setup, decorating, purchasing supplies, creating themes and ideas, cleanup, storage of decorations, and inventory tracking.
  • Assists in the preparation and maintenance of sports fields, including field lining, watering, grooming, and chalking.
  • Processes recreation program registrations, memberships, and facility reservations.   This includes tasks such as issuing refunds, printing membership cards and day passes, processing class transfers, and other related bookkeeping functions.
  • Monitors patrons using recreation facilities, identifying and addressing potential safety hazards to ensure a safe environment for all members and guests.
  • Responds to emergencies throughout the facility, providing rescue, first aid and support as needed.
  • Handles inquiries, complaints and requests for information from the general public.
  • Prepares various documents, including rosters, reports, and basis statistical summaries of daily activities.
  • Participates in daily facility operations, including cleaning and sanitizing work and public areas, as well as monitoring and maintaining supplies inventory.
  • Performs general clerical tasks to support office functions, such as data entry, creating flyers and promotional materials, answering phones, filing, maintaining event calendars, and updating websites.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Position Duties

Will possess knowledge of:

  • Local park policies, rules and regulations.
  • Basic principles and techniques of recreational programs and activities.
  • General safety protocols related to recreational facilities.
  • Effective communication strategies and customer service best practices.
  • Basic First Aid and CPR procedures.

Will possess the ability to:
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with city officials, program participants, community groups, and the general public.
  • Communicate clearly and respectfully with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Adapt to the varying needs of participants and changing weather conditions.
  • Work both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Understand, interpret, and apply recreation-related policies and procedures in interactions with the public.
  • Follow written departmental guidelines and protocols.
  • Work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as required for special events.
  • Successfully pass an extensive background check.

Will be skilled in:
  • Use of Microsoft Office Suite - Office 365 - (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Publisher, Outlook, Teams, etc.)
  • Performing basic arithmetic calculations, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, and percentages. 
  • Utilizing software relevant to emergency services and administrative functions, including spreadsheet creation and management

Minimum Qualifications

Education, Training, and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or GED Equivalent.

Licenses and Certifications:
All Licenses and Certifications required must be maintained throughout employment.

  • First Aid/CPR Certification or must be able to obtain it within 30 days of hire.
  • Fingerprint Clearance Card – Level 1 or the ability to obtain it prior to the first day of employment.
  • A valid Arizona Driver’s License at the time of appointment.

Special Requirements:
  • Residency in the United States and within 25 miles of the City of San Luis.

Desired/Preferred:
  • Bilingual in Spanish.
  • San Luis residency.
  • Customer service experience.

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, walk, and stand; talk and hear; use hands to finger, handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and perform repetitive movements of hands or wrists. The employee is frequently required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds unaided, and over 75 pounds with assistance. Employees must be physically capable of operating City vehicles, for job-related purposes, safely. Specific vision abilities required for this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.

Mental Demands
While performing the duties of this class, an employee uses written and oral communication skills; reads and interprets data, information and documents; analyzes and solves problems; uses math and mathematical reasoning; performs highly detailed work and multiple concurrent tasks; and interacts with colleagues and members of the public, including occasional interactions with dissatisfied individuals.  
 
Work Environment
The employee works in an office environment where the noise level is usually quiet.  Additionally, the employee may work outdoors where the he/she may be exposed to extreme weather conditions such as excessive heat and cold.
