Position may be converted from 11-month to 9-month, based on program/operational needs.

Evening, weekend, television, distance education (i.e. Lanai and Molokai), and off-campus (various high school campuses) may be assigned as part of the regular workload.

Continuation of position is dependent on program/operational needs and grant funding renewal.

This is NOT a remote position – the job requires in-person work.

Duties and Responsibilities: 

  1. Instructional Duties
    1. Deliver comprehensive, hands-on training in Esthetics, Nail Technology, and Beauty Operator skills to prepare students for licensing exams and employment.
    2. Design and implement lesson plans aligned with the Hawaii Board of Barbering and Cosmetology standards and industry best practices.
    3. Use a variety of teaching methods, including lectures, demonstrations, practical applications, and evaluations.
    4. Ensure that safety and sanitation protocols are taught and maintained at all times.
  2. Curriculum and Program Development
    1. Assist in updating and developing course materials to stay current with industry trends, tools, and techniques.
    2. Collaborate with program staff to align curriculum with state licensure requirements and the University of Hawaii, Maui College’s (UHMC) mission of student success.
    3. Provide input on course scheduling and program expansion opportunities, including continuing education offerings.
  3. Student Engagement and Support
    1. Guide, mentor, and assess students throughout their educational journey.
    2. Track student progress and provide constructive feedback and academic support.
    3. Foster an inclusive, respectful, and supportive classroom environment.
    4. Maintain low student-to-instructor ratios for quality learning.
  4. Operational and Administrative Tasks
    1. Maintain accurate student records, attendance, and evaluations.
    2. Ensure proper care and inventory of instructional materials, tools, and equipment.
    3. Participate in departmental meetings, planning sessions, and program reviews.
  5. Professional and Community Engagement
    1. Stay active in the beauty industry through licensure renewal, professional development, and networking.
    2. Serve as a role model and representative of the UHMC Beauty Program Operator, upholding high standards of professionalism.
    3. Support UHMC’s mission of preparing students to positively impact their communities through beauty education and service.

Minimum Qualifications:

Associates Degree (or higher) AND five (5) years related work experience AND a Current State of Hawaii Board of Barbering & Cosmetology Certification

OR 

15 College Credits plus training in the field of Esthetics / Nail Technology / Beauty Operator AND seven (7) years related work experience AND a Current State of Hawaii Board of Barbering & Cosmetology Certification

Supplemental Minimum Qualifications

  1. Demonstrates expertise and professional experience in salon operations, nail services, and/or permanent makeup.
  2. Strong communication and instructional skills.
  3. Commitment to student success and inclusive education
