About the Department

The Patrol Sergeant ensures the safety and security of Williams County by leading and participating in law enforcement activities, including patrol, emergency response, and investigations. This position is responsible for supervising and coordinating their assigned shift.

Position Duties

The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities performed by incumbents in this position. The duties and responsibilities described are not a comprehensive list and may change with or without notice.   • Supervises and participates in patrol operations, civil process service, investigations, and other duties on assigned shift
  • Supervises assigned staff; prioritizes assignments, oversees deployment of personnel, monitors work, and evaluates performance
  • Meets with staff to resolve workload or technical issues; ensures effective communication of Sheriff’s Office goals and priorities
  • Enforces local, state, and federal laws and ensures compliance with local regulations, ordinances, policies, and procedures
  • Responds to emergency and non-emergency calls for service; investigates, documents, and resolves traffic incidents, crimes, dangerous or illegal activities, and citizen complaints
  • Performs duties of a Sheriff’s Deputy as needed and assists in the performance of their daily work
  • Completes detailed reports, required paperwork, and conducts follow-up investigations as needed
  • Ensures assigned Deputies are prepared for duty, adequately trained and equipped, and held accountable for assigned responsibilities
  • Conducts staff briefings; reviews case reports and warrants; advises the Patrol Lieutenant regarding significant developments related to investigations, citizen complaints, and personnel
  • Manages critical incidents and investigations; responds to crime scenes and assumes command when appropriate
  • Coordinates activities with other law enforcement and emergency service agencies
  • Testifies as a credible witness in court proceedings
  • Maintains the Sheriff's Office's integrity, professionalism, and ethical standards by ensuring that all rules and regulations are followed
  • Maintains confidentiality of non-public records and makes available all data and information deemed a public record by the North Dakota Century Code

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent AND four (4) years of experience in law enforcement; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience 
  • At least three (3) years of law enforcement experience must be in North Dakota
  • Must pass and maintain license requirements by the North Dakota Peace Officer Standards and Training Board
  • Must possess a valid North Dakota Driver’s License or equivalent
  • Must pass a thorough background investigation and pre-employment drug and alcohol screening
  • Must maintain a level of physical fitness to meet Department standards
  • Technical certifications in CPR, First Aid, and specialized equipment are required
  • Must be able to work in uniform during weekdays, weekends, and holidays on any assigned shift

Other Qualifications

Work is performed in internal and external environments with exposure to inclement weather and varying temperatures; subject to physical harm such as dangerous vehicles, gunshots, and physical attacks; may be exposed to hazardous chemicals, drugs, and infectious and contagious diseases; required to restrain persons physically.
