About the Department

The Community Connections Coordinator plays a vital role in coordinating the Town’s community engagement efforts, implementing innovative partnerships, and supporting equitable access to resources for Chapel Hill residents. With a focus on inclusion and service, this position connects public housing residents with programs, services, and supports that build stronger, healthier neighborhoods.


This position is ideal for someone passionate about public service, community building, and resident services.


When Assigned to Support Public Housing

In assignments focused on public housing communities, the coordinator provides direct resident support, facilitates neighborhood programming, and fosters partnerships to address basic needs and promote self-sufficiency. Responsibilities include coordinating events and supporting food distribution, connecting residents with services, supporting reasonable accommodation processes, maintaining regular communication, assisting with grant efforts, and tracking program outcomes. This work requires strong relationship-building skills, a consistent community presence, and a collaborative approach with staff and partner organizations.

Work Schedule

Typical schedule is Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., with occasional evenings or weekends for resident meetings and community events.  Some remote work may be available.

Position Duties

  • Manage a portfolio of community engagement and empowerment initiatives aligned with the Town Council’s equity and inclusion goals.
  • Create and maintain partnerships with internal departments, nonprofits, educational institutions, and neighborhood groups.
  • Serve on Town teams and lead special or cross-departmental projects.
  • Prepare written reports, plans, and communications for Town staff, Council, advisory boards, and the public.
  • Foster innovative strategies for community outreach, relationship-building, and service delivery.
  • Model Town RESPECT values (Responsibility, Equity, Safety, Professionalism, Ethics, Communication, and Teamwork).
  • Perform other duties as required to support departmental initiatives.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A high school diploma and at least 5 years of relevant experience; or
  • An associate degree and at least 3 years of experience; or
  • A bachelor’s degree and at least 1 year of experience.
    • Experience should be in community development, social work, public health, human services, or a related field.
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
    • Valid driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience developing or leading community programs or resident services.
  • Familiarity with mental health resources, trauma-informed practices, youth/elder services.
  • Multilingual and/or experience working in diverse communities.
  • Comfort with Microsoft Office, Zoom, and Teams; willingness to learn new platforms. 

Supervision

May supervise high school and/or college volunteers or interns.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in social work/human services or related field, and/or 3-5 years of relevant experience. 

Work Environment & Physical Demands


Work is primarily performed in an office or neighborhood setting with occasional lifting of light objects and moderate movement (e.g., standing, walking, stooping). Travel between sites may be required.

Certification or licenses

Valid NC driver’s license preferred not required. This position must conform to the Town’s Safe driving and Accident policy and procedures.
