Duties

The Pacific West Region is recruiting for TEMPORARY seasonal positions not to exceed 1039 hours work in a service year. Dates of employment will vary depending on funding, weather conditions, and visitation. Within regulatory limitations, the length of initial appointment may be shortened or extended depending on work availability and funding. The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period is Nov-Dec, but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty: November 2025. Major Duties (WG 04-05): Operates and performs operator maintenance on various types of motor vehicles up to 10,000 pounds. Loads and unloads cargo, using appropriate tie-downs. Perform preventive maintenance such as checking and adding fluids to bring to proper levels, checking air pressure and adding when required. Safely use and maintain hand and power tools. Performs routine maintenance and custodial duties on buildings and grounds, and trails. Assist journeyman performing variety duties such as painting, plumbing, carpentry, and electrical, asphalt work and road maintenance by repairing pavement surfaces. (applies to WG-05 only) Transports passengers or cargo to their destinations throughout rural or urban area on park and/or public roads in full range of traffic conditions (or the equivalent). (applies to WG-05 only) WG-04 Physical Effort: Light physical effort is required to operate the vehicles controls. Moderate effort is exerted in the frequent handling of objects weighing up to 40 pounds, and the occasional handling of heavier objects while loading cargo, with the assistance of other workers or weight handling equipment. Other collateral duties may include more strenuous activities. WG-04 Working Conditions: Incumbent is required to work outside and is exposed to extreme hot and cold temperatures. Operates vehicles in all types of weather in a controlled traffic environment. Drivers are exposed to dirt and fumes, and to the possibility of cuts, bruises, and broken bones as a result of accidents while driving or from falling objects when loading and unloading the vehicle. WG-05 Physical Effort: Moderate physical effort may be required in making couplings between the vehicle and towed equipment. Considerable physical effort may be required to change tires and make limited emergency repairs. Required to frequently lift items weighing over 50 pounds. Work may involve climbing of ladders, scaffolding, and working in and around power tools and equipment. WG-05 Working Conditions: Incumbent is required to work outside and is exposed to extreme hot and cold temperatures. Operates vehicles in all types of traffic and weather on public roads and is exposed to dirt and fumes, and to the possibility of cuts, bruises, and broken bones as a result of accidents while driving or from falling objects when loading and unloading the vehicle. Requirements

U.S. Citizenship required. Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication. Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males. Required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program. You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided. Travel, transportation & relocation expenses will not be paid. Relocation expenses will be the employee's responsibility. Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must: Have the ability to do the work of a Motor Vehicle Operator WG-5703-04 without more than normal supervision. (Screen out). This includes work such as: operating a variety of motor vehicles weighing up to 10,000 pounds to transport personnel, material or equipment on private or government land; perform preventative maintenance on vehicles; load and unload cargo safely, using tie downs, straps, chains, etc. Have the ability to do the work of a Motor Vehicle Operator WG-5703-05 without more than normal supervision. (Screen out). This includes work such as: operating a variety of motor vehicles weighing up to 10,000 pounds to transport personnel, material or equipment on public roads; perform preventative maintenance and repairs on vehicles; load and unload cargo safely, using tie downs, straps, chains, etc. Has occasionally led a crew in the performance of these types of tasks. Non-Competitive Rehire Eligibility: Temporary seasonal employees can only maintain their non-competitive rehire eligibility if they work no more than a combined total of Temporary NTE less than 1040 hours anywhere in the National Park Service (NPS) within their established service year.
