EXAMINATION PROCESS
(a) General Assessment Examination - assesses job-related knowledge and understanding of fundamental instructional media technician functions.  Examination Date: TBD
(b) Structured Oral Interview -
assesses technical knowledge and experience, and one's general fitness for successful performance in the position. Examination Date: TBD

Competitors in any test shall take the test at the prescribed time unless religious affiliation, jury duty, military service, serious illness or bereavement in the immediate family requires other arrangements and advance written notice is provided to the director. Decisions for alternate test date(s) is at the discretion of the director.

A total score will be computed using weighted scores on the written and oral examinations. Applicants must receive a passing score on each exam to be placed on the eligibility list.

VACANCY:  ASSIGNMENT TYPE (s): 10 Month/Year - 4.5 Hrs/Day

Under general supervision, to perform a variety of library and instructional media technical and clerical work which promotes student literacy and library skills; to select, receive, catalogue, process books and other materials to support the K-12 curriculum; to do other related work as required.

Position Duties

Performs technical and complex clerical duties involved with the selection, ordering, receipt, processing, cataloging and circulation of library books, textbooks, audiovisual materials and other instructional materials which support the K-12 curriculum;

Assists students and teachers in locating books or in using reference materials, including computer and on-line resources, for research projects or leisure reading;

May provide literature and library skills presentations for K-12 students; assists students and teachers in the operation of new computer programs, CD ROM, the Internet and other equipment as needed;

Catalogs, classifies and assigns subject headings to books and other instructional materials;

Maintains computer databases, core literature collection and extended literature collections; card catalogs and necessary files and records;

Reviews, selects and/or makes recommendations for acquisition of books and other instructional materials to build and improve library and multi-media collections;

Generates, using computer or typewriter, a variety of materials, such as purchase requisitions, book lists, circulation statistics, catalog cards, work orders, correspondence and reports;

Arranges book displays, bulletin boards and exhibits;

Receives, logs, operates and schedules use of audiovisual equipment and materials;

Checks out books and other circulating materials and collects monies for fines and lost books;

Examines books in need of repair and may repair torn or otherwise damaged pages where feasible;

May monitor students' use of the Internet; may orient, train and supervise students and parent volunteers in the use of the library and media center;

Conducts perpetual and periodic inventories;

Maintains order and discipline among students using the Instructional Media Center.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience: One year of general clerical experience including some experience and/or training in library work; or, two years, or sixty units of college level course work may be substituted for the clerical experience requirement; experience working with K-12 students and coursework in child development desirable.

Education: Graduation from High School or equivalent required. Completion of at least two years of study (48 units) at an institution of higher education, or Associates or higher degree.

Other Qualifications

Knowledge of:

 Dewey Decimal Classification System and standard library terminology practices, procedures, and reference sources;

Modern office methods, practices and procedures including correct English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation.


Ability to:

Use and apply computer software programs related to the operation of a library;

Become familiar with the District’s curriculum and related literature, authors and reference material appropriate for K-12 students;

Perform difficult and complex technical and clerical library work without immediate supervision;

Maintain order and discipline among students; 

Operate standard office equipment including personal computer, software, printer, typewriter, and audiovisual equipment; 

Operate spreadsheet and word processing computer software; and

Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
