About the Department



The Storm Water Operator is responsible for maintaining and repairing the Town’s storm water facilities and systems by performing skilled and unskilled maintenance work. 


Storm Water Operator w/o CDL (A) starting pay is $20.00 an hour.

Position Duties

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  1. Inspects, services, and repairs storm manholes, storm drains, catch basins, in accordance with best management practices (BMPs).
  2. Cleans storm water structures, jet storm pipes, catch basins and inlets.
  3. Ensures that all equipment is being cared for and maintained properly.
  4. Performs labor involved in construction and maintenance of projects to include: pavement cutting, ditch digging, manhole and line cleaning, and landscaping the projects when finished.
  5. Maps, locates, and inspects storm structures using a Global Positioning System (GPS).
  6. Designs and maps street sweeping routes.
  7. Operates snow control equipment in the removal of snow and application of salt to Town streets and properties.
  8. Responds to resident complaints and resolves the issue in a timely manner.
  9. Assists other departments, as needed.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities: This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

Education and/or Experience: High school diploma or general education degree (GED); and one year experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Previous experience working in a storm water department job is desired.

Other Qualifications

Other Skills and Abilities: The following skills and abilities are either required or desired.

  • Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is required.
  • The ability to use a wide variety of tools and equipment to include: vacuum truck, dump trucks skid steer, backhoe, concrete mixer, loader, cut saw, and jackhammer, tractors, is required.
  • The ability to perform minor landscaping repairs is required.
  • A basic knowledge of erosion and sediment control is required. 
  • A basic understanding of pipe, street and MS4 systems is required.
  • The ability to operate Geographic Information System (GIS) and Global Positioning System (GPS) equipment is required.
  • A basic understanding of the vacuum truck and street sweeping operations is required.
  • Must have a working knowledge of the operations of heavy equipment.
  • Must be able to accurately locate and mark underground assets for “locate requests” through Indiana 811.
  • The ability to adapt and conform to shifting priorities and demands and execute accordingly. 
  • The ability remain current with all required licenses, certifications and in-service requirements is required. 
  • The ability to operate a computer, printer, copy machine, scanner, fax machine, and other office equipment is required.
  • The ability to speak, read and write in English is required. Spanish is desired.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outdoor weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet or humid conditions (non-weather); working near moving mechanical parts; working in high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; the risk of electrical shock; and vibration.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to very loud.

 

While the offices of the Storm Water Department are usually open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., this position may require work beyond these hours and on the weekends. It also requires the ability to drive Storm Water Department vehicles. Thus, a valid driver’s license is required.
