About the Department

The Specialized Skills Instructor - disABILITIES is a fulltime civil service position with the Metro Parks and Recreation Department.  This individual's role within the organization will be providing a safe environment to offer a variety of recreational experiences for children and adults with intellectual, developmental, and physical disabilities; plan, organize, and execute activities and events in a professional manner.

Metro’s Parks and Recreation Department offers a variety of facilities and programs throughout Davidson County. Currently, the department oversees nearly 16,000 acres of open space, including 184 parks and 107 miles of greenway. Metro Parks offers after school programs for children, activities for seniors (55+), cultural arts classes, dog parks, fitness classes, nature programs, sports leagues, ice hockey, art galleries, and much more.  It is the mission of Metro Parks and Recreation to sustainably and equitably provide everyone in Davidson County with an inviting network of parks and greenways that offer health, wellness and quality of life through recreation, conservation and community.

Position Duties

  • Actively participate in planning, organizing, and execution of programs for individuals with intellectual, developmental, and physical disabilities. 
  • Plan Day Program activities and schedules for disABILITIES Day Programs. 
  • Implement and lead planned activities. 
  • Practice good written and oral communication skills with participants, families, staff, volunteers, and various partner groups & agencies. 
  • Practice willingness and flexibility to work unusual hours. 
  • Practice good public relations skills. 
  • Maintain a valid driver’s license and drive/transport participants and equipment to various locations. 
  • Have knowledge of rules and skills for various sports to coach and officiate. 
  • Assist clients with self-help skills, social skills, & behavior skills when needed. 
  • Maintain a safe environment for programs, participants, and the public. 
  • Strive to be in compliance with rules and regulations for all locations inside and outside of Metro Parks facilities. 
  • Complete administrative duties as needed. 
  • Assist in maintaining a database of patrons enrolled in various disABILITIES programs. 
  • Assist in coordinating transportation services for participants. 
  • Serve as a contact with partners & sponsors, and assist in developing partnerships with various non-profits, businesses, and individuals to the benefit of the disABILITIES Programs. 
  • Advocate & promote the disABILITIES Programs in the community. 
  • Have knowledge and understanding of Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, SharePoint, etc. 
  • Have knowledge of first aid needs of individuals with various intellectual, developmental, and/or physical disABILITIES.
  • Work with supervisor on long-range planning including DEIA and accessibility initiatives and strategic planning for growth and collaboration.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
 

Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university and one (1) year experience in administering programs for individuals with intellectual, developmental and/or physical disabilities.

LICENSES REQUIRED:  Valid Driver License



PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
 

Must be physically capable of participating in the required activities of the position in both indoor and outdoor environments.

Note: Per Metro Ordinance No. SO94-1078. All employees of the Metropolitan Government shall be residents of the State of Tennessee or become residents of the state within six (6) months of employment as a prerequisite to employment with the Metropolitan Government.

Other Qualifications

  • Current CPR/First Aid
  • Experience providing leadership in organizing and conducting special events, such as Adaptive Sporting Events, Outdoor Activities, or Arts Activities
  • Experience assisting physically and developmentally disabled individuals with personal care tasks including wheelchair transfers, toileting, communicating personal hygiene and appropriate social behavior
