About the Department

RECREATION DEPARTMENT
Under the general direction of the Camp Director, the purpose of the position is to supervise, guide and facilitate programs for the campers, and effectively run assigned camp activities. Employees are responsible for the safety of all of the campers under their care, as well as the up keep of all program equipment. Employee must work with independence and initiative within the established policies and procedures. Performs other duties as dictated by the nature of the program.

Position Duties

Take responsibility for the leadership and guidance of an assigned group of campers.

Guide campers with rules and scheduled activities.

Take responsibility for the safety of each child.

Remain in the immediate area assisting in supervision during all activities including aquatics.

Assist with organizing, and implementing activity plans for special interest activities.

Assist with assuring proper sign in/sign out procedures are followed.

Monitor the needs of all children; treats each child with respect, dignity and as an individual.

Report any suspicions of child abuse to Supervisor as required by Florida State Law.

Take responsibility for all equipment and supplies used, helping maintain good working conditions, inventory and cleans-up after all activities.

Report all accidents to the Supervisor, and completely fill out proper health log and/or accident/incident form.

Attend required staff meetings and training sessions.

Monitors assigned facilities and ensures the safety, maintenance and cleanliness of recreational equipment.

 

Reports any repair or maintenance issues to the Recreation Supervisor, e.g. leaks, damaged equipment or facilities, dangerous hazards.

Keep accurate attendance and headcount records.

Report all hours worked accurately and in a timely manner to Recreation Supervisor.

Remain up to date on emergency procedures.

All other duties assigned by Recreation Supervisor.

 

ADDITIONAL POSITION FUNCTIONS  


Performs related duties as directed when such duties are a logical and appropriate assignment to the position.


Minimum Qualifications

Must be at least 16 years of age and be able to provide documentation of current enrollment in High School, College, or a Trade School; or possess a High School Diploma or GED.
 
The selected candidate will be required to complete an Affidavit of Good Moral Character; an Authorization for Criminal History Check; to include a level 2 National Criminal History Background Screen. (including Department of Children and Families clearance).
 
Preferred Qualifications:  
  • Six (6) to eleven (11) months experience within a similar community or recreational environment,
  • College graduate or currently enrolled in school.
  • Florida Driver's License
  • American Red Cross CPR/AED Certificate
  • American Red Cross First Aid Certificate

Other Qualifications

Knowledge of pertinent federal, state, and local rules, regulations, ordinances, and other regulatory standards applicable to the work.

Knowledge of the objectives and ideals of public recreation, including a thorough understanding of activities applicable to a demographically and culturally diverse community.

Ability to interpret rules, regulations, and policies for effective decision-making in accordance with established precedent.

Interpersonal, leadership, planning, management and communications skills; ability to communicate professionally verbally, in writing, and in presentations.

Ability to utilize personal computers, standard office equipment and standard software applications, e.g., word processors, database software, spreadsheet applications.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and communications with project consultants, private contractors, vendors, departmental officials and the public.

Ability to organize work, establish priorities, meet established deadlines, and follow up on assignments with a minimum of direction.

Ability to perform proper fiscal/cashiering skills to exchange monies for rentals, daily entry/sales operations and logging payments; generates appropriate receipts and filing daily reporting forms.

 
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
 

While performing the essential functions of this job the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

While performing the essential functions of this position there is potential for exposure to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic substances, outside weather conditions, excessive noise, and dampness/humidity.
