About Us:

GBMS is a non-profit organization that provides primary and preventive care services for both insured and uninsured patients. GBMS provides services to underserved individuals in three Maryland counties – Charles, Prince George’s, and St. Mary’s.

We are seeking a detail-oriented Staff Accountant to join our finance team. This role is ideal for someone early in their career looking to expand their accounting skills in a mission-driven environment. Responsibilities:

  • Maintain general ledger entries using double-entry accounting principles
  • Collaborate with other departments to ensure proper financial documentation and coding
  • Perform daily and monthly bank reconciliations
  • Reconcile account discrepancies and resolve financial issues as they arise
  • Review and approve accounts payable, ensuring correct coding, timely and accurate payments
  • Prepare supporting schedules and documentation for audits
  • Maintain reporting and oversight of grants; includes all grant accounting functions, preparation of required grant reports and maintaining grant documentation
  • Assist with Cost report and UDS reporting; compile supporting documentation
  • Assist with developing facility and departmental budgets, monthly budget analyses and reporting
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field
  • 1–3 years of relevant accounting experience
  • Experience with double-entry accounting software required; Experience with MIP Fund Accounting is a plus
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel (including formulas, sorting, and filtering)& Word
  • Strong analytical skills, attention to detail and a focus on accuracy and timeliness.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Nonprofit accounting experience helpful, but not required

Preferred Qualities:

  • Familiarity with fund accounting
  • Understanding of GAAP principles
  • Comfortable working both independently and as part of a team

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or business administration.

Substitutions

Associate’s degree in accounting, finance or business administration, and two (2) years of work experience such as described in the essential work tasks.

Work Environment

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
