08/19/2025 Additional Information: Show/Hide - Working with a medically fragile student, this employee implements the student’s specific health management plan while also facilitating the student’s access to education. There is a high expectation of continuous monitoring and supervision of the student’s medical status which will require medical care procedures and interventions as appropriate. This paraprofessional works to balance the need for medical procedures and interventions on behalf of the student with also helping the student to maintain the highest level of medical dignity and privacy. Monitoring activities include constant oversight of the student’s wound(s) status and any needed assistance. As delegated, the employee uses appropriate skills and techniques in performing medical procedures for example, frequent wound care for complex skin disorder as needed and/or other complex medical care procedures. The assigned Registered Nurse (RN) works closely with the student and the Paraprofessional role to oversee the student’s care and to ensure mandated processes are followed.
- Providing personal assistance to students which may include dispensing of medications, meal preparation, feeding, or toileting, along with various other care measures are all possible duties associated with the care of a medically fragile student. As appropriate the paraprofessional may also assist students with general life activities/skills such as self-care and mobility within the school environment.
- Maintaining current, accurate medical data for the assigned RN is a high priority of this paraprofessional. Activity Logs, Medications, Procedures, Equipment Inventory are all a part of the Paraprofessional’s responsibility. As the RN may be at multiple school sites throughout the day, there is an expectation for the para to proactively bring forward any concerns or questions regarding the student or care practices. Paraprofessional will oversee and maintain daily documentation that meets legal and claimable funding purposes and provides such reporting upon request.
- Participating in team planning, meetings and development activities as needed, this position serves as a technical resource to other staff for the purpose of providing support, information, and/or training and ensuring that the student’s needs are met. Paraprofessional will also participate in varied field trips/community outing as needed/required.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or equivalent required and*;
- 48 credit hours in early-childhood education, education, or healthcare required for hire, OR; successful passing of the Work Keys Assessments testing;
- Minimum two years of experience working with students; preference given for prior school district experience;
- Must successfully pass District approved lifting evaluation of 35 pounds upon hire;
- Minimum one-year experience working directly with students who have significant disabilities;
- Valid Colorado driver’s license or other form of official identification required;
- Successful passing of criminal background check required at time of hire;
- Must be able to lift 35 pounds; Lift test required at time of hire and renewed every three years;
- Quality Behavior Solutions (QBS) certification must be obtained within 90 days of hire;
- CPR Certification and general first aid training required within 30 days of hire;
- Attend and successfully complete all staff development training as required by state law or as directed by supervisor.
- Well-developed oral communication and phone etiquette skills in English;
- Ability to use Spanish oral communication skills is desirable;
- Strong working knowledge of special education and medical information privacy laws as outlined in the:
- Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA, 2015),
- Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA),
- Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA, 1996);
- Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA, 1974)

- Well-developed customer service, public relations, and interpersonal relationship building skills;
- Strong ability to use de-escalation techniques and to defuse stressful and possibly volatile situations;
- Ability to apply and explain the application of Human Resources’ policies regarding employment including benefits;
- Ability to maintain confidentiality in all aspects of the job, especially as related to student issues;
- Ability to work independently as needed with minimal direction and/or supervision;
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and frequent interruptions in a timely manner;
- Ability to be adaptable and flexible with critical thinking and problem-solving capabilities;
- Ability to promote and follow Board of Education policies, building and department procedures;
- Ability to communicate, interact, and work effectively and cooperatively with people from diverse ethnic and educational backgrounds;
- Ability to recognize the importance of safety in the workplace, follow safety rules, practice safe work habits, utilize appropriate safety equipment, and report unsafe conditions to the appropriate administrator.
- Operating knowledge of and experience with personal computers and peripherals;
- Operating knowledge of and experience with office software such as word processing, spreadsheets, and email;
- Operating knowledge of and experience with typical office equipment, such as copier, scanner, fax machine, etc.;
- Ability to operate a audiometer, automated external defibrillator (AED), assist with vison screenings, and read a thermometer required within 30 days of hire;
- Upon appropriate training and under the direct supervision of the School Nurse, the Paraprofessional for medically fragile student may perform procedures that include but are not limited to catheterizations and feeding tube clearings, toileting, oral suctioning, and care, anaphylactic injections, insulin reactions and other similar activities.

SUMMARY: Operating under the general supervision of the assigned Registered Nurse (RN), and building Teacher/Principal, this employee implements a specific health management plan for a medically fragile student while also facilitating the student’s access to education. Employee is responsible for continuous monitoring and supervision of the student’s medical status including performing delegated care procedures of the student’s skin and wound care. As the student’s medical safety allows Access to Education plans are largely implemented by the paraprofessional role. This includes helping with the delivery of instructional activities which may include implementation of an appropriate learning environment, and/or incorporating assistive technologies. The Paraprofessional is also often a point of contact for the staff and students entering the classroom environment and the employee must work cooperatively to facilitate these interactions. This position is an integral part of creating an environment that will facilitate successful learning for students with significant support needs as District 51 seeks to provide an equal opportunity and access to education to all students.
