CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

The Office Assistant classification series encompasses a broad category of clerical, office and staff support functions which are utilized in many County departments. Although actual assigned duties of positions may vary from, and within, each department, the primary duties generally involve word processing, data entry, customer service, telephones, mail processing, document and report preparation, utilization of department specific tools, processes and/or procedures, and record/file systems maintenance.

The Senior Office Assistant is the advanced journey-level and/or lead worker classification in the Office Assistant series responsible for performing the most difficult and complex work assigned to the series. Incumbents regularly work on tasks which are varied and complex, requiring considerable discretion, experience and independent judgment to perform assigned duties. Assignments are given with general guidelines and incumbents are responsible for establishing objectives, timelines, and methods to complete assignments. Work is typically reviewed upon completion for soundness, appropriateness, and conformity to policy and requirements. Positions that serve as a lead worker provide technical and functional direction, as well as training, for subordinate technical and clerical staff.

The Senior Office Assistant is distinguished from the Executive Secretary classification by the latter’s responsibility for providing complex administrative and routine analytical support to department management.
