About the Department
Senior Engineer, (Overhead Contact Systems) reports to the Manager, Traction Power Engineering and is responsible for engineering, construction, maintenance and design support of capital improvement projects for the Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board (Caltrain).
Position Duties
- Provide engineering expertise for OCS maintenance, design, construction, upgrades and modifications to the existing network.
- Participate in commissioning of new equipment, systems and technology, including testing of OCS as a Test Engineer or as a Witnessing Engineer for Contractor’s testing and commissioning.
- Review OCS designs and modifications, and ensure adherence to the relevant technical standards, safety standards and industry standards.
- Provide relevant technical guidance and reviews/updates on OCS technical documents and maintenance procedures.
- Review development of technical specifications, engineering maintenance instructions, engineering change requests, drawings and associated OCS documentation to ensure safe, reliable and efficient operations.
- Identify root causes of engineering issues and present appropriate solutions.
- Review and perform engineering calculations for OCS, to protect the integrity of the railroad electrification structures and to ensure technical requirements are met.
- Prepare calculations, plans, and specifications to support OCS designs and analysis using Caltrain design criteria and standards for new and improvement projects.
- Assist with reviewing drawings, construction cost estimates, specifications, technical reports, and other contract documents.
- Provide technical guidance to Project Manager(s) and other projects as required by responding to RFI, construction submittal and site-specific workplan.
- Perform site inspections during construction and maintenance projects to determine if they are within tolerance levels established by the Caltrain standards and other applicable regulations/specifications.
- Develop solutions and provide technical input for design optimization for cost effectiveness, risk management challenges and constructability improvements for capital and maintenance projects.
- Update railroad OCS-related engineering standards and as-built drawings.
- Conduct project meetings and field meetings with internal and third-party personnel.
- Perform all job duties and responsibilities in a safe manner to protect oneself, fellow employees, and the public from injury or harm. Promote safety awareness and follow safety procedures to reduce or eliminate accidents.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Department.
Minimum Qualifications
Sufficient experience, training and/or education to demonstrate the knowledge and ability to successfully perform the essential functions of the position. Development of the required knowledge and abilities is typically obtained through but not limited to:
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical or mechanical Engineering, or closely related field.
- Four (4) years of full-time progressively responsible professional experience in a rail transit traction electrification system
- A Professional Engineer's license is preferred but not required.
- Experience in construction and operation of 2x25kV AC traction power fixed equipment and associated assets is preferred.
- Extensive knowledge of budgeting, estimating and programming of OCS activities.
- Extensive knowledge of traction safe working principles, practices and procedures, including testing, commissioning and OCS modifications.
- WorkingknowledgeandexperienceofFederalandStatetransportationregulationsandprograms,including FRA, CPUC and AREMA is desired.
- An effective oral and written communicator with presentation skills.
- Possess a valid California driver’s license or the ability to obtain one within six months of employee with a safe driving record.
