10/13/2025 Additional Information: Show/Hide - Assists in the supervision, development and administration of the student transportation program to meet all the transportation requirements of the daily instructional program and extra-curricular activities.
- Assists in the supervision and recruitment, training and performance of all transportation staff, directly bus and van driver staff, and makes recommendations regarding their employment, transfer, and promotion.
- Monitors the routing process and procedures to ensure operation efficiency.
- Assists in the preparation of state and federal transportation reports as required.
- Assists in the preparation and management of the Transportation Department budget, analyzing costs and recommending cost control measures.
- Assists in the supervision and monitoring of the fleet including verification of inspection of vehicle equipment, the scheduling of needed repairs or preventive service work ensuring buses provide safe and efficient transportation service with a minimum of delays and disruption of service.
- In the absence of the Director of Transportation, Investigates and reports accidents in a timely fashion.
- Adheres to and enforces District Policies and conforms to D.O.T. regulations related to drug and alcohol testing of transportation employees.
- Assists in the coordination of student discipline problems with school administrators.
- Remains current on all changes in State, Federal or County laws, transportation regulations and requirements that may impact the District.
- Assists in negotiating with vendors to purchase transportation vehicles, equipment, materials and supplies.
- Assists in providing training opportunities for the transportation staff
- Communicates with parents, students and staff on a regular basis
- Perform other related tasks as assigned

The job of Assistant Director of Transportation requires full collaboration with the Director of Transportation for the purpose/s of effectively and efficiently directing, coordinating, and supervising all student transportation operations.

Mental Requirements
Learning Development- Level E Knowledge in a recognized professional field or technological discipline sufficient to command various principles, facts, and practical applications. Learning development is obtained by the completion of a college curriculum resulting in a bachelor's degree in a specialized field; advanced mathematics, very advanced language development, proficient understanding of practical systems.
Problem Solving - Level 3 Work situations are of sufficient scope and variety that significant interpretation and evaluation is required to successfully recognize and define problems. Highly technical judgments and/or constructive thinking involved. Alternative solutions must be considered and short-term action plans must be developed and sequenced.
Physical Requirements
Physical Skill - Level A Basic level of learned physical skill is required. No special coordination beyond that used for normal mobility and handling of everyday objects and materials is needed to perform the job satisfactorily.

Additional Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications
Experience, Education, and Certifications
Experience: Five years transportation management experience preferably in a School District or public sector entity, three of which are in a supervisory capacity. Minimum three (3) years of experience in a management position working with a large staff and large budget.
Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a relevant area preferred.
Certifications/Clearances: Must possess a valid Arizona DPS Level One IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card while employed. Possession of a valid Arizona Class B, CDL, with Passenger and School Bus Endorsement, Arizona School Bus Drivers Certification. DPS Instructor’s Certification preferred.
