Group Summary:
The NBA’s Direct to Consumer Products, Technology & Operations (DTC PTO) team’s mission is to bring the world courtside by providing the NBA experience for everyone, everywhere. The group creates and manages digital products that extend the league’s global reach from mobile applications to virtual reality experiences. We deliver live games, exclusive content, and experiences to fans across different devices through NBA League Pass, the league’s premium subscription offering, and NBA ID, the league’s membership program. The DTC PTO’s Business Initiatives team is responsible for developing and implementing strategies with a cross-functional team of digital business leaders to help accomplish key business objectives and metrics.
Position Summary:
The Technical Project Lead is a key leader within the NBA’s Direct-to-Consumer (DTC) organization, serving as the primary point of contact for the planning and execution of back-end platform architecture initiatives across the NBA team and league portfolio of digital products. This role is responsible for driving the successful delivery of high-impact projects that shape how millions of fans engage with NBA content across web, mobile, and connected devices.
This individual partners closely with Product, Engineering, and Operations leaders to ensure initiatives are delivered on time, within scope, and aligned with the league’s digital strategy. The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in agile delivery, strong stakeholder management skills, and a proven ability to lead complex, cross-functional efforts in a fast-paced environment.
Major Responsibilities:
- Scrum Team Management: Lead 2–3 dedicated scrum teams by managing capacity and velocity, ensuring accurate sprint planning and sustainable delivery pacing based on historical performance data.
- Agile Process Leadership: Own and facilitate all core agile ceremonies, including daily stand-ups, backlog grooming/refinement, sprint planning, sprint reviews, retrospectives, and cross-team release planning; actively manage related communications via Slack and other channels.
- Team Roadmapping & Reporting: Develop and maintain clear, actionable roadmaps for each team; track progress and provide regular reporting to product and engineering stakeholders on delivery status, timelines, risks, and team performance.
- Backlog & Scope Ownership: Take full ownership of backlog planning and scope management—ensuring stories are properly sized, prioritized, committed, and closed each sprint while tracking delivery metrics for continuous improvement.
- Project Identification & Execution: Identify larger efforts within the backlog that require structured oversight and manage them as projects, providing dedicated focus from initiation to closure.
- Process Optimization & Standardization: Define, implement, and continuously improve project management processes, tools, and best practices to drive consistency and delivery excellence across teams.
- End-to-End Project Lifecycle Management: Oversee the full project lifecycle, from initial scoping and requirements gathering to execution, QA, launch, and post-release support.
- Strategic Alignment & Prioritization: Ensure project delivery aligns with strategic business goals, digital product priorities, and fan experience objectives. As the primary liaison with the back-end platform architecture team it will be your responsibility to advocate for space in planning cycles for technical debt, system migrations, and platform architecture projects. Use your subject matter expertise to identify technical dependencies for the back-end team when considering front-end development during planning cycles and prioritization reviews.
- Risk & Issue Management: Proactively identify and resolve risks, blockers, and issues that could impact delivery timelines or product quality.
- Leadership Reporting & Communication: Provide regular, data-driven updates to senior leadership on project health, delivery status, key risks, and upcoming milestones.
- Stakeholder Management: Maintain strong relationships with cross-functional partners in Product, Engineering, Design, and Operations, ensuring clear alignment, transparency, and stakeholder engagement throughout the project lifecycle.
Required Education/Professional Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field
- Minimum of 5 years of progressive project management experience, including at least 3 years managing project teams
- Proven track record of delivering complex, cross-functional projects on time and within budget
- PMP or Agile certification preferred

Salary Range: $140,000-$165,000
