Purpose:
The job of instructional paraprofessional is done for the purpose/s of assisting in the supervision and instruction of students, working with individual and/or small groups of students in a classroom, monitoring students in a variety of different settings e.g. classroom, playground, cafeteria, computer lab, bus loading, field trips, etc. and providing clerical support to teacher.
Directly Responsible to: Classroom teacher and/or building principal.
Essential Functions
- Under direction of the classroom teacher or principal, teach computer skills to elementary students. Skills taught include but are not limited to keyboarding, word processing, integration of graphics, various Microsoft Software Applications including Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel, Navigation of internet windows/applications, Digital Citizenship. Experience with student database management (Google, googlc classroom, various other web- based accounts)
- Obtain and maintain basic computer/technology knowledge and skills to operate computers, projection systems, digital cameras, scanners, etc. by independently attending classes/courses and reading training manuals for software and equipment.
- Create and/or locate appropriate computer skills activities to reinforce skills taught using the Computer Lab curriculum provided.
- Learn, implement, and troubleshoot a variety of software applications to enhance staff and student learning (e.g., Microsoft Office, Tux Paint, online learning portals, and other online keyboarding applications etc.) by independently attending classes/courses and reading training manuals for software and equipment.
- Maintain the Apple Valley Computer Lab website to provide staff and students an effective online environment for collecting computer lab skills activities, websites, and online tutorials.
- Schedule and set up labs for technology classes
- Foster community education and school communication through monthly newsletters on Technology related happenings from the Summitview Computer lab (Microsoft Publisher)
- Prepare, administer, and proctor computer-based assessments and prepare data reports from the results (e.g. Renaissance Learning and Smarter Balanced Learning Consortium, IReady for reading and math).
- Facilitate and/or monitor small group and one-on-one instruction of students in order to present, guide and/or reinforce skills, concepts and strategies.
- Employ a variety of instructional and motivational techniques to encourage student learning and achievement, including classroom management techniques and positive guidance
- Implement instructional programs and lesson plans (e.g. reading, writing, math, online research, etc.) for the purpose of assisting the teacher in improving students’ academic success through a defined course of study.
- Maintain equipment, work area, students files/records (e.g. adapting instructional materials, cleaning work area, taking attendance, checking homework, grading papers, audio visual equipments, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring availability of items and/or providing reliable information.
- Utilize knowledge of computer hardware, software, projectors, equipment to perform regular maintenance tasks and overseeing the consistent functioning of devices.
- Monitor individuals and/or groups of students in a variety of settings (e.g. classroom, playground, parking lot, halls, to/from bus, field trips, in-house detention, etc.) for the purpose of providing a safe and positive learning environment. This includes, but is not limited to, supervising outdoor recesses year-round.
- Perform record keeping, data input, and clerical functions (e.g. copying, laminating, correcting papers, phone calls, translating, scheduling activities, preparation of bulletin boards, charts and posters. etc.) for the purpose of supporting the teacher or principal.
- Promote and reinforce positive behavior for the purpose of improving the quality of student’s outcome and encouraging student development.
- Attend job-related in-services, appropriate workshops and lectures and school in-services to enhance skills and improve professional growth.
- May promote parent involvement through activities, events and personal contact.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications
The ESSA (Every Student Succeeds Act requires that all Washington State Paraprofessionals MUST have a High School Diploma or GED and at least ONE of the following requirements:
- 2 year post-secondary degree or more
- 72 quarter credits at a post-secondary school
- Passed ETS Paraprofessional Assessment
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
SKILLS are required to perform multiple, non-technical tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: operating standard office equipment including using pertinent software applications; preparing and maintaining accurate records.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions. Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes: concepts of grammar and punctuation; stages of child development and learning styles; age appropriate activities; and a second language may be required for some positions.
ABILITY is required to schedule activities; collate data, and use basic, job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of individuals; work with similar types of data; and utilize job-related equipment. Problem solving with data requires following prescribed guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is limited. Specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: communicating with diverse groups; maintaining confidentiality; setting priorities; and working as part of a team.

Working Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting (able to lift 50 pounds and assisting in lifting over 50 pounds), carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 34% sitting, 33% walking, and 33% standing. The job related is performed under a generally hazard free environment and in a clean atmosphere.
Experience: Job related experience is preferred.
Education: High School diploma or equivalent required. Associates Degree or higher preferred.
Required Testing: As needed to meet requirements of the No Child Left Behind Act.
Continuing Education/Training: CPR Certificate and First Aid Certificate may be required
