Following general supervision, this person will assist in the daily monitoring and maintenance of the Dr. Welch Workshop, a Makerspace at Penn College.
Schedule: 25 hours per week — Tuesday through Thursday, 5:00–10:00 p.m., and Friday and Saturday, 12:00–5:00 p.m.
Qualifications:
EDUCATION
- High School Diploma or GED. Required
EXPERIENCE
- Two (2) years of experience in maintaining and assisting in a workshop-type environment. Required
- Experience developing and/or delivering technical training and interfacing with the public. Preferred
ABILITIES AND SKILLS
- Demonstrated ability to interface with students, faculty, staff, and the general public in a cordial and professional manner. Required
- Ability to monitor and assist in a busy workshop environment. Required
- Ability to use or learn to use common makerspace equipment and software and assist others in its use. Required
- Ability to explain technical concepts clearly and patiently to people of various skill levels. Required
- Awareness of and commitment to safety standards. Required
- Familiarity with common equipment maintenance routines. Required
- Passionate about making and educating others in making. Required
- Ability to provide efficient, courteous public service to diverse student body and to present a positive image of the makerspace in attitude, appearance, and performance of duties. Required
Responsibilities:
- Provides oversight, training, and assistance to makerspace users in safe and effective use and handling of equipment and materials.
- Advises and assists makerspace users in conceptualizing and actualizing their project ideas.
- Maintains a safe, clean, and welcoming workshop environment.
- Ensures users wear all necessary personal protective equipment and are dressed properly for the equipment they are using.
- Monitors equipment and consumables and informs the Manager of Makerspace Operations of needed purchases and repairs.
- Monitors access to the space and ensures users of equipment have appropriate training to do so.
- Develops, maintains, and shares knowledge regarding tools, equipment, materials, and software necessary to support users of the makerspace.
- Creates content/examples to highlight how makerspace equipment can be used.
- Assists in basic maintenance and repairs of equipment, including assembling, installing, and updating.
- Contributes to the shared vision of the makerspace and its services and assists in growing and developing the makerspace.
- Advises the Manager of Makerspace Operations of any safety, user, staff, or equipment issues.
- Must possess good hearing and visual acuity.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds without assistance.
