Job Summary
The Retail Accounting Assistant plays a key role in supporting the daily financial operations of assigned retail locations. This position is responsible for closing daily transactions, preparing journal entries, reconciling accounts, investigating, and posting inventory discrepancies, and assisting with other general accounting functions. The ideal candidate will have a basic understanding of accounting principles, strong attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively with store personnel and internal departments.

Duties and Responsibilities:
- Maintain and monitor the daily close checklist for assigned stores; ensure store books are closed in a timely and accurate manner.
- Prepare daily cash and sales over/short reports.
- Reconcile assigned general ledger accounts monthly, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
- Prepare and post journal entries related to store operations and other business activities as assigned.
- Collaborate with store managers and operations staff to resolve daily close issues and ensure timely completion of all tasks.
- Review and investigate inventory discrepancies and adjust counts accordingly in coordination with store personnel and inventory specialist.
- Identify potential margin issues and communicate findings to the pricing and store managers to ensure pricing accuracy.
- Enter scheduled fuel deliveries into the accounting system.
- Support internal audits and assist with gathering documentation or data as needed.
- Participate in process improvements and suggest ways to enhance efficiency in accounting operations.
- Maintain strong, professional relationships with managers, co-workers, and other departments.
- Perform other related duties and accounting tasks as requested by the Accounting Supervisor.
Qualifications
Required Skills and Abilities:
- Basic understanding of accounting principles (GAAP), cash management, and inventory control procedures.
- Ability to prepare and analyze basic financial reports.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficient in keyboarding and data entry; familiarity with accounting software and Microsoft Excel.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a deadline-driven environment.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate across departments.
- Comfortably perform basic math calculations and financial reconciliations.
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Minimum 1 year of experience with computerized back-office or accounting systems.
- Experience in a retail or convenience store environment preferred.
- Associate degree in Accounting or Business (or coursework toward one) is a plus.
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer and able to lift 10 pounds at times.
