What You Will Be Doing:

Plan and implement individual and group therapeutic activities including but not limited to competency restoration, sports, physical exercise, creative arts, cultural events, and special interest groups for adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients with physical and/or mental disorders at the state psychiatric facility. As well as facilitating competency restoration groups with defendants at the Anchorage Correctional Complex, Hiland Mountain Correctional Center, and API’s outpatient facility in Anchorage.

This position is located at 3700 Piper Street in the U-MED district of east Anchorage which offers several maintained walking trails, parks and nearby lakes. This area is filled with several restaurants, shopping stores, and has easy access to public transportation.

Who We Are Looking For:

We are looking for a candidate with the following competencies:

Skills and experience in organization and implementation of individual and group recreational, leisure and adaptive skill activities.

Knowledge, skills and experience with the use of therapeutic techniques to increase motivation to socialize and use leisure time constructively.

Knowledge or experience in assessing patients’ leisure, social and recreational abilities, deficiencies and barriers.   Skills to administer and interpret appropriate assessments and share findings with a multidisciplinary Treatment Team. 

Skills and experience to lead structured gym activity groups and recreational activity groups for adults or adolescents and successfully manage hostile or potentially unruly individuals.

Position Duties

Successful completion of a formal training plan as a Psychiatric Nursing Assistant 2 with the State of Alaska.
OR
One year of experience directly working with and providing paraprofessional aide, treatment, and/or rehabilitation services to patients or clients who have been diagnosed with or experience mental illness, behavioral or cognitive disorders, and/or addiction as part of assisted living, independent living, or treatment services, home, or facility setting.
 
Substitution:
Post-secondary education in psychology, sociology, mental health, and/or chemical dependency may substitute for up to six months of the requisite experience (2.67 semester/4 quarter hours equal one month).
 
Special Note: 
Some positions may require the successful applicant to pass a background investigation, including fingerprinting, as a prerequisite to employment. These requirements will be indicated at the time of recruitment.
 
Some positions may require the successful applicant to provide proof they are free from active pulmonary tuberculosis at the time of hire. Employees are required to be tested annually. These requirements will be indicated at the time of recruitment.

Minimum Qualifications

At time of interview applicant must submit:

  • List of three (3) professional references, including daytime phone numbers.
  • Three (3) most current evaluations, if available.
  • College transcripts (if using education to meet the minimum qualifications). These can also be attached to your application at the time of submission.

If selected for the position and prior to hire, the applicant will be asked to: 
 
1. Submit to fingerprinting and background check screening.
  2. Provide proof of Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis (Tdap), Mumps, Measles, Rubella (MMR), and Varicella Immunizations.
  3. Provide proof of Hepatitis B (immunity or declination statement)
  4. Provide annual Influenza vaccination or a signed declination statement.  
5. Proof of Tuberculosis screening within the past 12 months.

BACKGROUND CHECK

The successful candidate must pass a comprehensive background investigation, which includes a state and FBI fingerprint-based background check.
