Title: Math Intervention Assistant Reports To: School Principal
Takes Direction From: Classroom Teacher and School Principal
Schedule/Calendar: 7 hrs./day 35 hrs/week 183 days/year
Summary: The Mathematics Assistant will aid the classroom teacher in executing the students educational program.
Essential Functions:
- Discusses and reviews math topics with students in small groups
- Assists individual students with questions during class periods and teacher instruction
- Reviews math material with individual students who were absent
- Relocates students with IEPs to separate testing rooms and assists with individual needs as required
- Prints, copies, scans, and emails materials to lead teacher for use in classroom
- Distributes calculators to various rooms for testing
- Labels calculators with room number, calculator number, and teacher name
- Assists students with homework, review for quizzes and tests, and general math questions in all math classes
- Relocates students to the computer lab to utilize the math computer program during occasional wrap-around class periods
- Escorts students to principal’s, counselor’s, or behavioral coach’s office when necessary
- Assists substitute teachers and students when lead teacher is absent from class
- Creates worksheet answer keys to assist students with correctness of their work
- Counts and distributes printed copies of worksheets, study guides, and guided notes to math teachers for their classrooms
- Assists lead teacher with quiz and worksheet corrections
- Records student homework completion for teacher gradebook
- Records daily assignments, homework collected/checked, new material (including notes), and homework due on paper for absent students to review upon their return
- Provides feedback to lead teacher on student’s understanding of class lessons
- Follows instructions of IEPs when necessary
- Recognizes a student’s misunderstanding of material by witnessing errors in written work or by casual conversation with them and then explains the information so they understand
- Discusses student needs and lesson plans with teachers in advance to prepare for upcoming classes and to be proactive in helping the lesson function smoothly and efficiently
- May help the class as a whole
- Pulls out groups of students to work with
Education and/or Certification Required:
- Associate's degree or 2 years higher education
- Teaching experience preferred
Experience Needed:
- High School Diploma
- Teaching certification experience preferred
