The Opportunity
Position Summary:
Reporting to the Manager, Workplace Safety, the Workplace Safety Advisor is a critical contributor to the organization’s occupational health and safety efforts. This role supports the day-to-day execution of workplace safety programs and fosters a proactive safety culture by partnering with departments across the organization.
The Advisor serves as a knowledgeable resource to staff, supervisors, and leadership, ensuring alignment with provincial legislation, internal policies, and best practices in hazard identification, risk mitigation, training, and incident response.
The ideal candidate brings a hands-on, solutions-oriented approach and a strong commitment to safety excellence in a complex, fast-paced, and regulated environment—such as healthcare, long-term care, or public services.
Key Responsibilities:
Safety Program Implementation & Compliance
-Assist in the rollout and maintenance of organizational safety programs, ensuring alignment with applicable legislation and internal standards.
- Conduct regular facility inspections to proactively identify, document, and escalate hazards or non-conformances.
- Provide input on the development and continuous improvement of safety procedures, job hazard analyses (JHAs), and safe work practices tailored to operational needs.
- Support site readiness for inspections, audits, and accreditation by maintaining regulatory compliance and documentation.
Hazard Identification & Risk Mitigation
- Facilitate and participate in job-specific and site-wide hazard assessments, recommending appropriate controls to minimize risk.
- Monitor work environments for emerging safety risks and support operational leaders in addressing unsafe conditions or behaviors.
- Provide subject matter expertise in high-risk areas, including ergonomics, sharps safety, chemical management, and personal protective equipment (PPE) protocols.
Training, Education & Awareness
- Deliver or coordinate safety-related training programs such as WHMIS, First Aid/CPR, fire safety, and respiratory protection fit testing.
- Assist with onboarding safety orientation for new hires and provide refresher education to support ongoing competency and compliance.
- Track safety training records, certifications, and compliance metrics using the organization's learning management or reporting systems.
- Promote staff engagement in safety through targeted campaigns, toolbox talks, and participation in Safety Week or wellness initiatives.
Incident Management & Investigation
- Support the initial response, documentation, and investigation of workplace incidents, injuries, and near misses.
- Collaborate with supervisors and the safety team to identify root causes, recommend corrective actions, and follow up on implementation.
- Assist in developing trend reports and incident dashboards to inform strategic improvements and identify recurring safety issues.
Internal Collaboration & Committee Participation
- Act as a safety liaison to frontline teams, supervisors, and union representatives to address concerns and provide technical guidance.
- Serve as a resource for Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) activities, including inspections, meetings, and policy reviews.
- Participate in emergency preparedness planning, evacuation drills, and response evaluations.
Reporting, Metrics & Documentation
- Maintain detailed, timely, and confidential records related to inspections, incidents, training, and risk assessments.
- Support the development of monthly and quarterly safety performance reports for leadership and regulatory bodies.
- Contribute to the evaluation and refinement of safety programs using performance data, benchmarking, and stakeholder feedback.

Qualifications & Experience:
- Diploma, certificate, or coursework in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Health, or a related field.
- Actively working toward or holding a CRSP, CHSC, or equivalent designation is considered an asset.
- Minimum 3 years of experience in a workplace safety, OHS, or compliance-focused role; healthcare, industrial, or government experience preferred.
- Sound knowledge of Alberta Occupational Health and Safety legislation, including the Act, Regulation, and Code.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and incident/training tracking systems
