About the Department
With a sharp eye and a commitment to fairness, you’ll dig into possible fraud cases in our income maintenance programs. You'll be working with real people and real stories—uncovering the facts and making informed decisions to protect public resources. Think of it as CSI: DSS (without the late-night stakeouts).
Position Duties
In a nutshell, you will:
- Interview clients and witnesses to figure out if fraud has occurred.
- Collaborate with other departments and the court system to bring facts to light.
- Review case files like a pro and analyze supporting documents.
- Prepare reports, recommendations, and sometimes courtroom-ready material.
- Help ensure program integrity while navigating sensitive and occasionally tough situations.
- Stay current on changes to economic services—because knowledge is power!
Minimum Qualifications
What You’ll Need
- Preferred: Associate’s Degree in Human Services, Criminal Justice, Paralegal Studies, or related field + 2 years as a Caseworker or Investigator
- Or: High School Diploma/GED + 3 years of relevant experience
- And: A valid NC driver’s license, because the occasional field visit might be part of your journey
The Physical Side
Mostly office work, with a mix of sitting, standing, and moving around. Occasionally lifting light items (paper files, not filing cabinets!), and definitely using your eyes and ears a lot.
