The City of Tacoma is recruiting for the position of Asphalt Plant Crew Leader. 

The Asphalt Plant Crew Leader is a lead worker position for the Public Works Department. An employee in this classification is responsible for the efficient operation and maintenance of the City's asphalt mixing plant and aggregate storage facilities. Duties include, but are not limited to, operating the asphalt mixing plant, driving/operating a wide variety of equipment, and providing training and work direction to assigned workers to accomplish assigned duties. Work is performed independently after receiving general directions from a Supervisor.

Position Duties


Two (2) years of increasingly responsible experience in the operation and maintenance of asphalt plants

LICENSES, CERTIFICATES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
A valid Washington State Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A with Tanker Endorsement and Air Brake removed at time of application with maintenance thereafter

Must obtain a valid flagging and traffic control card and a First Aid and CPR card prior to probation completion with maintenance thereafter



Minimum Qualifications

Responsibilities Include:

  • Asphalt, aggregates and mixtures and their physical properties including asphalt mixing formulas as they relate to appropriate mix for proper application
  • Tools and equipment used in an asphalt plant and material screening equipment
  • Methods and practices utilized in maintaining asphalt plant and equipment
  • Principles of training and providing work direction
  • Pollution and safety rules and regulations as they relate to asphalt plant operations and activities
  • Record-keeping techniques
  • Technical aspects of field specialty
  • City operations, policies and objectives
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy
  • Proper methods of storing equipment, materials and supplies
  • Assume full responsibility for the efficient operation, maintenance and repair of the asphalt plant and related equipment
  • Accurately evaluate condition of materials and equipment and take effective action to avoid plant stoppages
  • Maintain routine records and prepare reports
  • Communicate with internal departments, local businesses and other organizations
  • Add, subtract, multiply and divide quickly and accurately
  • Read, interpret, apply and explain codes, rules, regulations, policies and procedures
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others
  • Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action
  • Meet schedules and timelines
  • Work independently with little direction
  • Complete work with many interruptions
  • Plan and organize work
  • Assign and review the work of others


Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
  • Asphalt plant environment; subject to extreme heat and noise
  • Position requires pushing, pulling, bending, lifting and climbing
  • Lift up to 50 lbs. properly and safely without assistance and up to 100 lbs. with assistance
  • Employees in this position may be exposed to potentially hazardous materials

Pay Details: 

Hourly Rate: $44.10 - $48.62

Annual Salary: $91,728.00 - $101,129.60
