Description

The Safety Manager plays a critical role in ensuring the health and safety of employees working in high-risk environments. This position serves as both a strategic leader and hands-on expert, responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing safety programs that align with regulatory standards and industry best practices.

They act as a subject matter expert in utility-specific hazards and collaborate with field crews, project managers, and regulatory bodies to foster a culture of safety. The Safety Manager also leads incident investigations, conducts audits, and provides training to ensure continuous improvement and compliance.

This role demands a proactive mindset, strong communication skills, and the ability to lead by example in dynamic and sometimes hazardous conditions. This role is full-time, on-site in San Diego, CA. 

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement safety programs tailored to utility operations (e.g., transmission, distribution, substations)
  • Conduct site safety audits and inspections to identify hazards and ensure compliance with OSHA and industry standards
  • Lead incident investigations, analyze root causes, and recommend corrective actions
  • Provide training and education on safety protocols, including high-voltage procedures and confined space entry
  • Collaborate with project managers and field crews to integrate safety into planning and execution
  • Maintain accurate records of safety metrics, audits, and regulatory compliance
  • Serve as a mentor and coach to field safety observers and frontline worker

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication abilities
  • Ability to lead teams and influence safety culture across departments
  • Proficiency in safety management software and reporting tool

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, or related field
  • 7–10 years of experience in safety management, preferably in electric or utility sectors
  • Strong knowledge of OSHA regulations, NFPA 70E, and utility-specific safety standards
  • Certifications such as CSP (Certified Safety Professional) or CUSP (Certified Utility Safety Professional)
  • CPR/AED certification and familiarity with emergency response protocol

Physical Requirements & Work Environment:

  • Field-based role with frequent travel to utility sites
  • May require overtime depending on project demands
  • Exposure to varied environmental conditions (heat, cold, confined spaces)
  • Frequent movement across utility sites, including uneven terrain and confined spaces
  • Office-based tasks such as documentation, reporting, and training coordination
  • Occasional use of ladders, scaffolding, or stairs to access elevated work areas
  • Required during inspections or incident investigations in tight or low-clearance areas
  • Handling equipment, safety gear, or materials—typically up to 25 lbs frequently, and 35–50 lbs occasionally
  • Regular travel between sites or facilities, requiring a valid driver’s license
