About the Department

The Stormwater Volunteer Coordinator plays a crucial role in promoting public awareness of and engagement with stormwater management and water quality within the framework of the Town’s NPDES water quality permit. The purpose of this position is to assist with coordinating volunteer activities and managing opportunities for public involvement and education, and to serve as an education resource for the community in support of the mission and goals of the Stormwater Management Division. 


  • This position is classified as temporary and does not qualify for benefits. 
  • Temporary employees are limited to working 950 hours in a 12-month period.
  • All Town employees must pass a pre-employment background check and drug screen.


The work hours are flexible depending on the availability of the employee. This position tends to work 10-20 hours a week depending on the season, with more in-person work around Stream Team monitoring months. Hours will generally fall between 8:30am and 5:00pm Monday through Friday. This position requires occasional evening and weekend work depending on the event calendar.


The work is typically performed both virtually and in-person. The position involves working at a desk in an office setting and working community events at offsite venues, including events outdoors. In-person events are often held on uneven ground, both on- and off-trail around streams and in roadside rights-of-way.  

Position Duties

Some of the activities that the Volunteer Coordinator will be involved in will include:  

  • Managing Stream Team, a Tier 2 volunteer water quality monitoring program, including coordinating equipment pick-up and drop-off, troubleshooting equipment issues, interpreting data, and assisting with volunteer training. Stream Team duties are in-person and typically fall in the months of January, April, July, and October, but may also require work leading up to and following monitoring months
  • Working with interns during the Fall and Spring semesters
  • Coordinating education, outreach, and volunteer training events
  • Research
  • Data analysis and visualization
  • Designing and publishing outreach materials  
  • Conducting surveys 
  • Clerical work including data entry tasks, filing, copying, etc. 
  • Performing other duties as assigned 

Minimum Qualifications

To be considered for the Volunteer Coordinator position with Chapel Hill Stormwater, candidates must: 

  • Demonstrate effective communication orally, in writing, and/or in graphic forms 
  • Be proficient with computers and able to learn how to use software applications including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Canva, and ArcGIS Survey123 
  • Be eager to learn and able to work independently 
  • Be able to get to the Stormwater Office at 208 N. Columbia Street and Public Works at 6850 Millhouse Road
