Job Summary: This position is located at the Kansas City Veteran Affairs Medical Center (KCVAMC). The incumbent functions as a Maintenance Mechanic Supervisor for the In-House Construction Crew (IHCC) in the Facilities Engineering Service, accomplishing trades and labor work.
Major Duties:
- The primary function of the IHCC is to accomplish improvements to the physical plant, building structures, exterior sites and/or utility systems through a variety of construction projects involving all types of construction trades organized into work groups, or crews, of varying makeup based on the specific needs of each assigned construction project. The incumbent serves as the first line supervisor of the IHCC for the KCVAMC and reports directly to the Assistant Chief, Facilities Engineering Service. The duty station for this position is at the main campus of KCVA but will oversee project at the Honor Annex and any other outlying KCVA facilities. As a Maintenance Mechanic Supervisor you will: Responsible for the technical supervision of the IHCC to carry out the mission of the organization. Determines acceptability, rejection, or correction of staff work. Performs regular inspections of all IHCC projects to ensure compliance with all plans and using service requirements. Schedules and participates in as necessary all utility shutdowns involving all IHCC construction work related activities required to minimize adverse impact on VAMC operations. Make action plans based off of specifications and instructions. Keeps Facilities Management Service (FMS) informed of slow progress, anticipated delays, or any other adverse impact on KCVAMC operations due to construction work. Maintains construction schedules and milestones and can present those items when asked by leadership. Ensures all inspections and timelines are coordinated with contractors, subject matter experts, and Projects/Engineering. Works closely with FMS Projects Department throughout the life cycle of the construction project. Ensures all safety and commercial construction codes and regulations are followed by staff and contractors. Makes or delegates all purchasing for all of the IHCC construction sites. Maintains a "Tiger Team" for smaller projects. Ensures all logistical support is in place prior to start of a construction project. Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 06:30am to 02:30pm. Physical Requirements: The employee handles and carries tools, equipment and testing devices that seldom weigh over 50 pounds. The work is normally performed at sites where most of the equipment can be reached from the floor or from ladders. Occasionally, platforms and scaffolding are needed to reach parts of the systems such as fans, electrical and water lines and duct work. Is occasionally required to stoop, stretch, bend, kneel, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Working Conditions: Most of the work is done inside, but the employee is subject to temperature changes when working on equipment such as wiring in computer rooms. The employee is occasionally subject to burns, cuts, electrical shocks, and respiratory ailments. Exposure is repeated, prolonged or concentrated amounts of refrigerant gases may cause toxic effects to eyes, skin, and internal organs.
