Perform work requiring skills in the trade of HVAC for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of HVAC systems. Provide expertise in the HVAC field for troubleshooting complex issues, applying trade knowledge exclusive to those with HVAC experience. This position may perform duties related to chiller maintenance, complex dining refrigeration, or highly restricted scientific research constant temperature control systems.
UNH Facilities is a 24/7/365 operation and has responsibilities related to campus safety and emergency response. Due to the nature of our business, employees may be asked to flex schedules and/or respond to requests outside of normal working hours to meet the demands of the university. This may include early morning, evening, weekend, and holiday work as needed. This position is also classified as “essential staff” and thus required to report to work during campus curtailments.
Duties/Responsibilities
Service Calls and Customer Service (60%)
Respond to service calls and requests related to the operation, repair, maintenance and replacement of HVAC systems. Ensure work is of the highest quality while meeting current codes and safety procedures. Trouble-shoot minor and complex HVAC systems and contact the manufacturer’s technical representatives for consultation. Utilize electronic sources of trouble shooting and problem identification software. Provide exceptional customer service by responding to requests in a timely manner (according to priority timeframes), communicating status and following up with customers once work is completed. Using the work management software, maintain accurate records of work completed, materials used, and time expended. Participate in the on-call rotation and respond to emergency situations, including off-hours periods, as needed.
Preventative Maintenance and Project Work (20%)
Perform preventative maintenance activities including periodic visual and hands-on inspections/assessments of assigned equipment. Update and maintain records in the work management software. Participate and provide expertise in project management meetings regarding equipment replacement, renovations and new building plans. Complete other HVAC project work as assigned.
Leadership and Mentorship to the Facilities Division (10%)
Participate, support, and demonstrate Facilities Forward concepts which contribute to a positive work culture. Demonstrate leadership qualities during work activities. Mentor, develop, and train apprentices and new employees. Oversee and provide feedback about contractors working on campus in the HVAC field as needed.
Safety and Training (10%)
Follow all refrigerant recovery and gas codes and other recognized policies/procedures, techniques and safety precautions in the performance of duties. Keep current on all required safety trainings, code license updates, and any certifications required. Continuously seek out professional development opportunities that will benefit the University and technical skills to stay current and knowledgeable of best practices, future trends and technologies.
Minimum Acceptable Education & Experience:
HS Diploma or equivalent.
A combination of professional education, certificates, and experience in HVAC equal to 6 years, or 4 years’ experience with advanced training in an HVAC system, to include but not limited to Trane systems, York systems, Daikin systems, or Mitsubishi systems.
Required Licenses & Certifications:
Motor Vehicle License
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Ability to obtain EPA Universal Technician License
Ability to obtain NH Gasfitters License
Ability to read and work from blueprints, technical manuals, charts, and schematics.
Knowledge of applicable codes/ ordinances.
Knowledge of methods, tools, and hazards of the HVAC trade.
Ability to inspect equipment, determine malfunction and make necessary repairs.
Knowledge and ability to use computers, tablets, smart phones, and software systems to perform work duties.
Sufficient strength and physical dexterity to perform duties and responsibilities of this job, including heavy work with exposure to inclement weather conditions for prolonged periods of time.
Must be able to wear and use appropriate personal protective equipment as necessary.
Solid interpersonal and communications skills, both verbally and written, to effectively communicate with customers, team members, contractors and supervisors.
Preferred Qualifications:
Completion of Two-Year HVAC Certification Training
EPA Universal Technician License
NH Gasfitters License
