A Day in the Life as a Head Start Assistant Teacher:

As the Practice-Based Coach, you’ll play an essential role in providing coaching to direct care staff to support their understanding and implementation of social emotional development of children throughout their daily routines. The Practice-Based Coach plays an essential role in the professional development of early childhood educators. Your day will involve:

  • Completing focused observations of staff, providing strength-based feedback, and facilitating self-reflection by the individual, and providing constructive suggestions to help them improve teaching practices. 
  • Assisting direct care staff in the refinement of skills and use of new knowledge in everyday interactions with young children. 
  • Engages ongoing communication between mental health/disabilities team and leadership to support the needs of the program

Your role will directly contribute to positive employee experience and efficient operations across the organization.

Requirements

Qualifications to Be an Assistant Teacher:

To excel in this role, you’ll need:

  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education or a related field required; completion of the Practice-Based Coaching Training Institute; training/coursework in Adult Learning Principles preferred 
  • Experience: Previous experience working in an early childhood classroom, knowledge of Head Start Performance Standards 
  • Skills: Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills. Ability to effectively communicate with team members, young children and their families, and ability to relate comfortably to income-eligible families.
  • Characteristics: Attention to detail, confidentiality, problem-solving skills, and a commitment to fostering a positive workplace and early childhood classroom experience.
  • Technical: successful completion of criminal record check, CPR/First Aid certification

A valid driver’s license and reliable transportation may be required for occasional travel between program locations.
