Check out this link to find out more about IT@Cornell.Custom Development (CD), a unit within the Enterprise Services division of Cornell Information Technologies, provides website and web application services to Cornell customers. The team develops in several technologies and provides both project and support services to campus. The CD team offers services on a for-fee basis, requiring monitoring and reporting on all work efforts.The OpportunityCornell Information Technologies (CIT) Custom Development team is seeking a Web Developer with entry-level experience in development, configuration and support skills across Drupal and/or WordPress website/web applications. The person in this role will have programming skills, problem-solving abilities and a strong work ethic with the ability to manage multiple tasks while delivering completed build tasks on time and on budget. The Custom Web Developer works collaboratively with CIT’s Project Management Office (PMO) Project Managers and campus partners to estimate project scope, schedule and milestones; develop and implement web solutions that meet client needs; and provide support for other concurrent CD projects as needed.Core Job Responsibilities as a Custom Web Developer include but not limited to
  • Assisting in documenting functionality requirements provided by the customers.
  • Creating new websites: from installing Drupal/WordPress, modules and plugins, partnering with designers, testing development work, facilitating the launch process, etc.
  • Supporting existing websites: Providing support to various Drupal and/or WordPress websites (in various versions). Providing status updates to support leads and customers while working on solutions.
  • Patching/maintaining various Drupal and/or WordPress websites: Keeping audit logs and quickly investigate and resolve any issues that arise.
  • Contributing ideas and efforts towards internal projects and working as part of a team to find solutions to various problems.
  • Staying current with what is coming next with Drupal and/or WordPress, known issues we should watch out for and researching new versions as they are being developed.
  • Identifying opportunities for more campus collaboration and sharing to embrace the open-source nature of the CMS. This includes sharing at the Cornell Drupal SIG, CIT/ES Town Halls, Symposiums and other opportunities.
  • Partnering with a team of: Project Managers, Designers, UX specialists, QA specialists and other programmers on various project tasks and support tickets.
  • Performing Quality Assurance testing on their own work for compliance with Cornell Web Accessibility Policy. Evaluating and responding to issues identified during testing and QA; developing, recommending and implementing, as necessary, innovative solutions. Ensuring all new work, procured products and websites meet Cornell established Web Accessibility standards.
What We NeedRequired Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree or up to two (2) years experience in relevant field. Experience with Drupal and/or WordPress, including site setup, building, and configuration to meet customer specifications or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Familiarity of PHP, HTML, and CSS.
  • Familiarity with source control systems such as GIT, etc.
  • Familiarity with web cloud hosting provider environments such as Acquia, Pantheon and others.
  • Knowledge of SEO coding best practices.
  • Familiarity with OWASP top issues, experience remedying websites or web applications with security issues.
  • Ability to create accurate estimates when provided with customer requirements.
  • Ability to accurately log time for metrics and billing.
  • Results-oriented, reliable, able to work under pressure.
  • Ability to communicate technical ideas to business users and other teams (design, QA).
  • Ability to both collaborate with team members and to work independently.
  • Eager to embrace current and emerging web technologies.
  • Ability to handle a fast-paced work environment, deadlines and new challenges.
  • Ability to partner with both designers and project managers.
  • Aptitude to communicate and work well with others.
  • Ability to review, estimate and track work assigned.
  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.
  • Demonstrated skill in understanding of cultural differences.

  • Ability to assist with front-end development theming technologies (ie Twig, PHP template).
  • Experience with web accessibility and familiarity with WCAG 2.2.
