Position Summary:
SMH is seeking a hands-on IT Support Specialist to provide technical support, maintain hardware and software systems, and ensure smooth day-to-day technology operations across the hospital. This role is especially critical in our rural setting, where dependable IT support directly impacts patient care and staff efficiency.
The ideal candidate is a problem-solver with strong technical knowledge and the ability to work independently, while also supporting non-technical staff in a professional and approachable manner.
Key Responsibilities
- Hardware Setup & Maintenance
- Install, configure, and maintain desktops, laptops, printers, phones, and other devices.
- Perform routine maintenance, upgrades, and troubleshooting on hospital hardware.
- Ensure secure setup of medical equipment that interfaces with IT systems.
- Software & Systems Support
- Install and update operating systems, applications, and hospital-specific software.
- Provide user support for EMR/EHR systems, Microsoft Office, email, and other business applications.
- Maintain system backups and basic disaster recovery protocols.
- Networking & Connectivity
- Support and troubleshoot wired/wireless networks, internet connections, and VPN access.
- Coordinate with external vendors for internet, phone, and IT service issues.
- User Support & Training
- Serve as the first point of contact for staff IT issues (in person, phone, or email).
- Provide basic training and guidance to hospital staff on computer and system use.
- Document processes and create simple reference guides for staff.
- Security & Compliance
- Implement and monitor IT security protocols to protect patient data (HIPAA compliance).
- Regularly update systems with patches and antivirus/malware protection.
- Maintain inventory of IT assets and ensure secure disposal of old equipment.
Qualifications
- Education/Experience
- Associate’s degree or Certification in IT, Computer Science, or related field preferred.
- 1–3 years of IT support experience preferred (healthcare setting a plus).
- Technical Skills
- Strong knowledge of Windows OS, Microsoft Office 365, and networking fundamentals.
- Experience with EHR/EMR systems preferred.
- Ability to troubleshoot hardware, software, and connectivity issues quickly.
- Soft Skills
- Strong communication and patience with non-technical staff.
- Self-starter able to prioritize in a fast-paced environment.
- Willingness to work flexible hours when critical IT issues arise.
Physical & Work Environment Requirements
- Ability to lift and move equipment up to 50 lbs.
- Comfortable working in a healthcare environment where patient care is the top priority.
