An exciting opportunity has arisen in the School of Geography and Planning for a Senior Executive Officer. The role will lead and manage teams of professional services staff responsible for the education operation delivered by the school. The role oversees the development of the school’s taught programmes, quality processes and the student experience.

The role forms part of the school’s senior professional services team, and the postholder will provide specialist strategic, planning and analytical support for the School Manager as well as offering oversight across programmes and student experience.

The successful candidate will have a remit of working in education services providing expert leadership. The successful candidate will be required to engage effectively and work collaboratively with academic and professional services teams with the School’s Director of Learning and Teaching alongside the Arts Humanities and Social Science College and wider University colleagues.

This post is full-time and fixed term for 12 months, to cover a period of leave (35 hours per week).
Start date to be confirmed (January 2026 TBC).

Salary: £41,064 - £46,049 per annum, with 4 annual increments up to £46,049 per annum (Grade 6), final salary at top of grade.  New appointments are usually made at the starting point of the salary scale.

Job Description

To support the Director of Teaching and Learning at the School of Geography and Planning in the delivery of education provision and academic quality. To take responsibility for the effective and efficient delivery of all services provided by the Education Teams (undergraduate and postgraduate), overseeing the operation and development of the school’s taught programmes, providing advice, guidance and support, and leading projects in this area.

Key Duties
  • Lead and manage the Student Services Team, ensuring high-quality service delivery across all academic support functions.
  • Work closely with the School Manager to implement operational strategies and ensure alignment with School and University goals.
  • Contribute to the long-term management of the School by translating strategic priorities into operational plans.
  • Oversee programme development, review, and approval processes for UG and PG programmes.
  • Ensure robust systems for quality monitoring, enhancement, and compliance with University regulations.
  • Manage student lifecycle processes including recruitment, enrolment, assessment, progression, awards, and study abroad activities.
  • Coordinate timetabling, student records, and case management, acting as the investigating officer for student complaints and cases.
  • Provide expert advice to academic leads on policy development and implementation.
  • Attend and contribute to School and University committees, influencing decisions on teaching and learning.
  • Prepare and disseminate management reports and data to inform decision-making and support institutional reviews.
  • Lead, motivate, and support team members, overseeing induction, workload allocation, PDRs, and training needs.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement, collaboration, and professional development.
  • Support team members with welfare concerns, escalating appropriately to specialist services.
  • Liaise with central and college services to resolve issues and ensure effective collaboration.
  • Advise Boards of Studies and relevant College/University groups on programme changes.
  • Ensure all student administration practices comply with University regulations and external requirements.
  • Act as a point of escalation for complex student issues, ensuring timely and compliant resolution.
  • Gather, analyse, and report on data to identify trends and support strategic decisions.
  • Manage and coordinate the accreditation process for relevant programmes.

General Duties

  • Engage in ongoing personal and professional development to enhance performance and support evolving responsibilities.
  • Develop networks across the School, College and University to ensure the success of the team’s objectives and long term plans.
