About the Role
Cardiff University is seeking a proactive and enthusiastic Welsh-Medium Education Promotion Officer to join Yr Academi Gymraeg. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in promoting and supporting Welsh-medium education across the University.
You will work collaboratively with staff and students to increase engagement with Welsh-medium and bilingual provision, helping to attract and convert students to study through the medium of Welsh. You will also lead on developing outreach activities for secondary school pupils, working with internal departments and external partners such as CYDAG, Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol, and Caerdydd Ddwyieithog.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide expert advice on recruiting and enrolling students to Welsh-medium provision.
- Identify and support students who may benefit from studying through the medium of Welsh.
- Build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders to promote Welsh-medium education.
- Develop and deliver training and resources to support staff in promoting Welsh-medium opportunities.
- Lead working groups to monitor progress against Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol targets.
- Collaborate with the Students’ Union and meet regularly with students to understand and enhance their experience.
- Support strategic initiatives with the Dean of Welsh and other key staff to improve student engagement.
Essential:
- NVQ Level 4 or equivalent experience.
- Fluent Welsh speaker (written and oral).
- Strong understanding of Welsh-medium education in higher education.
- Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage priorities effectively.
- Experience in Higher Education and/or Welsh-medium education.
- Understanding of behavioural change, bilingualism, and language planning.

Salary: £33,951 - £35,636 per annum (Grade 5)

Job Description
The Welsh-Medium Education Promotion Officer will work closely with Yr Academi Gymraeg and colleagues across the University to enhance engagement with Welsh-medium education. The role will focus on attracting students to study through the medium of Welsh, supporting their transition to Welsh-medium and bilingual provision, and increasing the uptake of Welsh-medium modules. The Officer will also play a key role in supporting and enriching students’ learning experiences throughout their time at the University, as well as engaging with prospective students.
There are two elements to the work:
i) Identify Welsh-speaking and non-Welsh-speaking students at all levels who are already enrolled on undergraduate programmes offering Welsh-medium options; work with Welsh-speaking students and staff to overcome challenges that prevent students from choosing Welsh-medium modules; promote Welsh-medium opportunities for students; report on the University's Success Measure Number 8: We will achieve the Coleg Cymraeg targets for the percentage of students from different language groups converted to different credit levels.
ii) To develop a programme of engagement activities for secondary pupils, both Welsh-speakers and learners, in collaboration with relevant university departments and key external stakeholders (e.g. CYDAG, Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol, Caerdydd Ddwyieithog).
Duties and Responsibilities
Key Duties
- Provide professional advice and guidance in relation to the processes and procedures of recruiting and enrolling students to Welsh-medium provision, using a variety of strategies to suggest the best course of action where appropriate.
- Look at specific issues relating to identifying and supporting students who require advice and support to study through the medium of Welsh;
- Collaborate with others to formulate recommendations and strategies to develop long-term processes and procedures;
- Build working relationships with key stakeholders and create relevant communication pathways with University Schools/Departments and external stakeholders supporting and developing Welsh-medium activities, opportunities and education;
- Create dedicated working groups involving colleagues across the University to monitor data and stakeholder behaviour to meet Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol's targets;
- Develop and deliver training in behavioural change techniques and resources to support staff;
- Undertake various administrative duties to support Yr Academi Gymraeg to develop suitable and supportive opportunities for staff and students;
- Support and lead other staff across the University to promote Welsh-medium education as required;
- Work with the Vice-President Cymraeg in the Students' Union and meet regularly with students to understand their experiences and behaviour to support them to make the most of opportunities and benefit from Welsh-medium education;
- Work with the Dean of Welsh, the Branch Officer and relevant staff to develop strategies to develop student experience and convert them to Welsh language provision.
