Engineering Manager

SNSW Grade 11/12
Ongoing permanent role
Locations: Haymarket, Parramatta or Gosford (Hybrid)

Lead with purpose. Shape systems. Empower engineers.

At Service NSW Digital, we’re not just building software, we’re transforming how over 8 million people across NSW access public services. With over 200 digital products and 60+ cross-functional teams, our work spans everything from disaster response to everyday service delivery.

We’re a cloud-first, cloud-native organisation using modern engineering practices like Lean Product Management, Extreme Programming (XP), and User-Centred Design to deliver fast, stable, and meaningful digital services.

As an Engineering Manager, you’ll lead engineering teams with empathy and clarity, guiding them through technical and organisational complexity. You’ll bring deep engineering experience and enterprise architecture knowledge, and your focus will be on people, systems, and strategy. This is a leadership role for someone who understands the challenges engineers face and can help them thrive.

What you’ll do

This is a strategic, people-first leadership role where you’ll:

  • Build and nurture high-performing engineering teams across a product portfolio.
  • Lead hiring, onboarding, and career development for engineers.
  • Champion engineering excellence and uplift practices across teams.
  • Facilitate alignment and architectural discussions with a macro lens; how systems interact, what data they share, and how they scale.
  • Drive continuous improvement in engineering practices, tools, and systems.
  • Lead workforce planning activities including coaching, mentoring, talent management, succession planning.
  • Embed engineering-centric communication and change initiatives (e.g. security, accessibility).
  • Influence cross-functional collaboration and foster alignment across product, design, and delivery.

What makes this role different

  • Strategic impact. Influence engineering culture and capability across portfolios.
  • People-first leadership, grow and develop engineers with empathy and clarity.
  • Opportunity to work on enterprise architecture to guide teams with system design from a modern, application-centric perspective.
  • Embedded in product teams, collaborate closely with the Head of Engineering and the Group Product Directors.
  • Hybrid work model, typically 1–2 days in the office per week.
  • Structured onboarding academy to help you hit the ground running.

What we’re looking for
This role is not a natural next step for a high-performing senior engineer who wants to keep building. It’s for someone ready to lead at scale, with a macro focus and a passion for people and systems.

We’re after engineering leaders who:

  • Have experience managing and mentoring software engineers in agile environments.
  • Bring strong technical fundamentals and enterprise architecture knowledge.
  • Understand modern programming languages and frameworks (Java, Kotlin, Spring, React, Bash, Powershell).
  • Are experienced with cloud platforms (AWS preferred), containerisation, and automation tools.
  • Communicate with clarity and emotional intelligence, especially in complex or ambiguous situations.
  • Collaborate across disciplines and influence stakeholders at all levels.
  • Thrive on challenges and inspire others to do the same.
  • Understand that leadership is not about doing, it’s about enabling others to do their best work.
