JOB DESCRIPTION
Summary
The Principal Equipment Engineer leads the evaluation, procurement, installation, and optimization of automated manufacturing equipment. This role ensures equipment reliability and performance by developing maintenance strategies, driving continuous improvement, and supporting new process development. The position requires advanced troubleshooting across multiple disciplines, cross-functional leadership, and the ability to mentor and influence others.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead evaluation, selection, and implementation of advanced manufacturing equipment.
- Develop maintenance policies, procedures, and infrastructure to maximize tool uptime.
- Identify, track, and resolve equipment deficiencies; design and implement improvements.
- Partner with process engineering and maintenance on new applications and processes.
- Analyze equipment performance data, identify trends, and deliver improvement recommendations.
- Perform advanced troubleshooting with a strong focus on safety and risk management.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to resolve performance issues and improve machine design.
- Develop and execute test plans; validate tool configurations and provide technical training.
- Mentor and guide engineers and technicians across product lines.
- Evaluate emerging technologies to enhance manufacturing capability and competitiveness.

Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or related field; advanced degree preferred.
- 5+ years of relevant experience (e.g., BSEE +5 yrs, BS EET +8 yrs, MSEE +4 yrs).
- Hands-on expertise in electronic circuit analysis, high-voltage systems, and semiconductor tools.
- Experience in reliability testing, SPC, RAM/Insight systems, and process improvement.
- Ability to work independently, lead cross-functional teams, and mentor others.
- Travel up to 20%.
Work Environment
- Requires regular exposure to electrical hazards, radiation, mechanical systems, and chemicals.
- Occasional lifting up to 50 lbs. and working in variable environments.
- Must consistently follow safety protocols and safe working practices.

U.S. BASE SALARY RANGE
$134,216.32 - $201,324.48This base salary range reflects the typical compensation for this role across U.S. locations.
Our salary ranges are determined by role and level; individual pay is determined based on
multiple factors, including job-related skills, experience, relevant education or training, work
location, and internal equity. The range provides the opportunity for growth and progression as
you develop within the role.
Base pay is one part of our U.S. total compensation package which includes eligibility in the
Axcelis Team Incentive bonus plan, and comprehensive benefits package (for regular
employees working 20+ hours a week).
